Edgar Berlanga is not pulling punches ahead of his fight against Canelo Alvarez. He oozes confidence and wants to make the most of his dream fight. He has already predicted a knockout victory for him and doubled down on the same fact during the ‘It Is What It Is’ podcast on the Come And Talk 2 Me YouTube channel.
Berlanga warned Canelo again of his threat and questioned the legacy of his previous opponents—Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia and their fight against Canelo. It was a brutal interview where Berlanga did not back down and also predicted a first-round knockout against the unified super middleweight champion.
Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia were only there for a payday?

The Brooklyn native not only hyped up his fight against the unified champion but also threw shades on some of Canelo’s former opponents. He was adamant about the fact that Canelo would be facing a whole new challenge, something he had never faced before. In the process, he attacked Munguia and Charlo and claimed that they only fought Canelo for an easy payday. “I’m not Charlo, I’m not Munguia who just came for a payday. You know what I’m saying. They bow down to him (Canelo). Nah, I’m not doing that.”
This statement could be considered insulting to the legacy of Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia and their fight against Canelo. The Mexican boxer might have dominated both of them, but it was a commendable effort from their side. They gave their all against the undisputed champion, but Canelo’s experience and ring IQ helped him outfight them.
But it did not matter to Berlanga as he doubled down on the fact that Charlo did not offer much fight to the champion and “tucked his tail.” He insisted that it is a warrior sport and you have to give your life. “You can’t do that. At the end of the day, there’s a sport. You gotta go in there and die on your shield. This sh*t is a gladiator sport. You have to die in the ring.”

Is Edgar Berlanga the real deal, or are Charlo and Munguia still the ones to beat?

But it is shocking to hear such a statement from ‘the Chosen One’, as both of these boxers are far more experienced than him. It will also be Berlanga’s first title fight, something that Charlo and Munguia already had. Not only this, but both of them had more career wins than Berlanga’s total matches. So, a statement like this stands on shoddy grounds.
Well, Edgar Berlanga didn’t stop there and made a promise to Canelo for a fight like never before. He also stated that the unified champion won’t know what hit him and promised a ‘first-round knockout.’

During the podcast, Mason Betha asked Edgar Berlanga whether the fans can expect his 17th first-round knockout victory on September 14. The New York-born boxer was quick to reply and stated that Canelo has never fought a ‘real 168-pounder.’ “Honest thoughts, definitely a 100%. I told him(Canelo) in the press conference before that you have never been hit by these (punches) before. You are fighting a real 168-pounder.” There is some validity in his point. How so? Both Charlo and Munguia had mostly fought at a different weight category before their fight with Canelo. Charlo jumped from light middleweight to super middleweight. Meanwhile, Munguia had only two fights at super middleweight before the bout with Canelo Alvarez.
However, Edgar Berlanga has fought in the super middleweight division for the majority of his career. He has the power and explosiveness of a 168-pounder and his punches will be harder than those of the last few competitors of the unified champion.
This is not the first time that Berlanga has claimed that he will knock Canelo out. A few weeks ago, Berlanga stated that he would knock Canelo out in just six rounds. During the podcast, he was open about how much he respects Canelo but also made it clear that it is now his time and he will be the new face of the 168lbs division.
