It was two years ago that British boxer Chantelle Cameron won the undisputed title by defeating Jessica McCaskill. In the following year, she defended all her belts against a formidable opponent in Irish boxer Katie Taylor spoiling her Dublin Homecoming. However, her glory days as the undisputed champion were numbered as she relinquished all her belts in the rematch held again in her opponent’s backyard 3Arena Dublin in November of the same year. But, it seems she wouldn’t be getting the much-anticipated trilogy fight against Taylor anytime soon. “The belts were grabbed off me and then she’s run. I don’t want to leave it like that. It will annoy me for the rest of my career. She can’t be running away with them 140lb belts. Somehow I’m going to track her down and I’m going to fight again for my belts,” Cameron said. The two-division undisputed champion Taylor has her hands full as she will be defending her undisputed status against Amanda Serrano. But a resolute Cameron wants to retrieve all the titles she has lost. Her venture starts with vying for the WBC interim world super-lightweight championship title first in a bout against French boxer Elhem Mekhaled. Then, she will be eyeing a contest against the winner of the Serrano vs Katie Taylor bout.
Mekhaled, on the other hand, still hasn’t won a world title in her career. Her attempt at being the world featherweight champion was thwarted by American boxer Alycia Baumgardner. She will be desperate to add to her two-streak win as she jumps two weight divisions to fight at super-lightweight. A win against Cameron will bump up her chances to fight for the world title albeit in the super-lightweight division. The fight will be held at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and will be broadcast over TNT Sports on July 20.

Seething from her loss against Katie Taylor, Cameron will be looking to make a statement against Mekhaled. Compared to the French boxer, Cameron has a better boxing pedigree, with wins against world champions like Katie Taylor, Jessica McCaskill, and Mary McGee. The aggressive, front-foot boxer, has a boxing record of 18-1 with her sole loss coming against ‘The Bray Bomber’.

Meanwhile, Mekhaled also had the same number of fights as Cameron in her career. But, the French boxer has picked up one more loss than Cameron. In fact, she picked up two back-to-back losses against Delfine Pierson and Alycia Baumgardner. Both were title fights, and she blew it. The loss against Baumgardner must have hurt the most as it was her opportunity to become the undisputed super featherweight champion.
Nonetheless, she must have learned valuable lessons from her defeat, and one can be hopeful that she will be using her learnings effectively in the upcoming fight.

Interestingly, both fighters are of the same age, and both fighters have made their boxing debut only a year apart from each other. Mekhaled debuted in 2016, while Cameron started his professional career the following year.
Comparing the height and weight of both fighters, Cameron has a significant advantage over Elhem Mekhaled, coming in at 5′ 8″ and 69″ reach. Mekhaled is 3 inches smaller in height than the English boxer and has a 661/2″ reach. “Capo” can use her longer and rangier hands to keep her at a distance, and utilize the jabs to the fullest extent. On top of that, the Northampton-born boxer’s punches have more power having a KO ratio of 44.44% compared to Mekhaled’s measly 17.65%. Only three of the French boxer’s fights ended in knockouts.

To make things worse, Cameron has another massive upper hand because she will be fighting at her usual weight class, while Mekhaled will be making the jump from super-featherweight to super-lightweight. On paper, it looks like a comfortable win for Cameron who will be looking to use his height, weight, and power advantage to finish the fight early. Meanwhile, Cameron will have to fight cleverly and look to avoid close-quarter brawling to avoid Cameron’s power punches. On the flip side, the boxer from Northampton should be looking to make the fight as ugly as possible for Mekhaled.
How many of you think Mekhaled will be able to pull off an upset win against Chantelle Cameron? Or, would you go with the boxer who is winning on paper? Let us know in the comment section below.
