Is Canelo Alvarez dodging real competition by eyeing a fight with Imane Khelif in Japan?

From the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley, and Gennady Golovkin to Edgar Berlanga. Probably that’s how many fans perceive Canelo Alvarez‘s boxing journey thus far. The till-recently undisputed champion faces Berlanga for a September 14 card at the T-Mobile Arena. Now bereft of the IBF belt, he will have to defend the remaining three titles as a unified champion. Nevertheless, many fan circles are now openly discussing the matchup. For some, the clash with David Benavidez would have made more sense than ‘The Chosen One’.

The news of the kickoff press conference in New York had barely settled in when a bombshell of a report emerged. It seems the super middleweight supremo might be looking for a third fight this year, hopefully by December. But the best part is that instead of his favorite haunt in Las Vegas or closer home in Mexico, the fight may take place in ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’! No prizes for guessing the update seems to have startled many fans who were just reconciling with the Berlanga matchup. Some of them quickly joined in, venting whatever came over their minds.

Citing columnist Salvador Rodriguez, Michael Benson tweeted that per the details received from Canelo Alvarez’s longtime trainer Eddy Reynoso, contingent on the champion winning his 66th career fight against Edgar Berlanga, they are considering arranging a fight for the Mexican icon in Japan by this year-end.

After Jermell Charlo, many expected the Canelo Alvarez-David Benavidez matchup to finally fall into place. However, Alvarez started the year with the fight against Jaime Munguia. When talks for his September feature emerged, a few hoped ‘The Mexican Monster could finally get a chance. Benavidez, who was Alvarez’s mandatory challenger (WBC), eventually moved on, landing at 175 pounds.

There remains some degree of interest in the fight with Terence Crawford. But given ‘Bud’ just got over with his light middleweight bout, chances of him returning in the near future appear slim. So who is it going to be in ‘The Monster’s homeland?

But where’s the fight we want to see?

Needless to say, for some, the very thought of Japan was enough to prompt Naoya Inoue‘s name. Let’s check what a few of them had to say about Canelo Alvarez’s proposed course of action.

Apparently speaking on behalf of many fans, this user expressed excitement about a potential matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Naoya Inoue. So much so, they believe that the contest would finally silence critics who have been accusing the super middleweight champion of avoiding tough challenges.

Stating matter-of-fact, this fan stated that only a fight with Terence Crawford or David Benavidez matters to them.

The next user allowed the imagination to break barriers. A match between Canelo Alvarez and the recently ‘in-controversy’ Algerian boxer Imane Khelif!

Inoue was still not done. Getting back to ‘The Monster,’ this fan proposed both Canelo Alvarez and the sole undisputed champion among men to fight to feature on the same event. But there’s a problem: who will take over the main card and who will be willing to fight in the co-main?

Finally, an Alvarez fan mustered courage to speak up for their icon. Appreciating the champion for being very active, they highlighted, unlike other fighters who enter the ring only once or twice in a year.

Incidentally, his failing to defend his IBF title from the number one contender, William Scull, led to Canelo Alvarez losing his undisputed title.

In all probability, fights against Benavidez and Crawford may not be in sight, at least for the time being. So is there a chance to pick a fighter from the ranks for the Japan fight? One good option could be reverting back to Caleb Plant for a rematch. Also fighting on the September 14 card, Plant makes a strong case for the matchup. It’s something that ‘Sweethands’ too eagerly desires after the terrible loss he suffered three years ago at Alvarez’s hands.

Who would you prefer Canelo Alvarez fighting, if at all a fight comes up as Eddy Reynoso envisions?
