The Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga headliner event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 14 could be a night of hits and misses. On the plus side, it is well on its way to becoming a sold-out event, beating His Excellency Turki Alalshikh-sponsored Noche UFC event to a punch, which is still lagging in ticket sales. But, the PPV pricing of the Canelo event could be an alarming concern to some, especially considering the PPV price for the subsequent event.
Apart from the Canelo event, there is another exciting card lined up for the month of September. Riyadh Season will be back with the highly anticipated Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois Wembley Stadium event on September 21, the pay-per-view price for which has been revealed. Now, this presents an interesting conundrum for boxing fans—which event to watch considering the PPV prices are not cheap for boxing matches?

Notably, Canelo’s upcoming headliner event which will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN is priced at a whopping $89.99. On the other hand, the AJ vs Dubois event, just a week after, is priced at a considerably lower $19.99. It seems like HE Turki Turki Alalshikh’s latest interactions with fans on social media to make boxing PPVs more fan-friendly have bore fruit. “Riyadh season card ppv Will be with good price for the fans,” he had earlier promised to fans on X.
Furthermore, the sequence of events might play out perfectly for the Saudi Arabian Royal who is at loggerheads with Canelo after the latter snubbed his offer to fight Terence Crawford. After all, he had vowed to “eat” Canelo’s upcoming event with the Noche UFC at Las Vegas Sphere.

Meanwhile, fans’ reactions to the PPV prices for both fight cards could spell trouble for Canelo. This raises the question — Will the ‘face of boxing’ fighting on Mexican Independence Day weekend turn into a PPV flop?
Which event’s price is right?
One fan claimed that the pricing of the Joshua-Dubois event was reasonable enough, and hence they would pay for that over Canelo’s fight card. They commented, “$20 in the afternoon I will buy for sure. Plus I have the rest of the day to play with.” Also, the timing of the Riyadh season card is quite convenient, starting at 2 p.m. ET, while the Mexican boxing icon’s PPV show starts at 7 p.m.

This fan, too represented the overwhelming sentiment of the boxing community on social media. They stated, “I’m buying AJs card. Not Canelo’s lol.” Safe to say, the pricing had something to do with influencing this particular fan’s decision.
Again, another fan felt that the Canelo-Berlanga event’s PPV price was too steep, and they would instead opt for the Turki Alalshikh curated Riyadh Season fight card. They remarked, “I’ll pay $20 but im not paying $90.” Seemingly, Turki Alalshikh is quickly becoming a fan favorite, committed to offering thrilling boxing matchups at a more affordable price.
Meanwhile, another fan feels that Canelo’s upcoming PPV event was fairly priced as there is a stark difference between the quality of the undercard fights in both events. They highlighted, “When you see the undercard you understand why.” The Canelo fight card does include some prominent boxers in the undercard like Caleb Plant, Danny Garcia, Erislandy Lara, Rolando Romero, and Stephen Fulton.

Another outlier, diverting from the overwhelming response, commented that even though Canelo’s fight card was priced at a very steep rate, it would have more PPV buys than the Anthony Joshua headliner event at Wembley Stadium. They stated, “70 dollar difference and I bet canelo still sell more.” The comment highlights the massive pull Canelo Alvarez still has on fight fans worldover.
