Is Canelo Alvarez‘s charisma on the decline? That’s the first question that will pop up in your head when you look at the number of unsold tickets for the Edgar Berlanga event. The event didn’t turn out to be a complete sellout, unlike the event in the same neighborhood.
Alvarez vs. Berlanga was touted to be selling out every ticket put on sale, with the cheapest made available at $300. With the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry angle and the occasion of Mexican Independence Day, it made sure the crowd flocked to the T-Mobile Arena on September 14. However, in the end, few tickets remained unsold.
BoxingTickets, a ticket sales analysis portal, turned to its X handle and disclosed the ticket numbers to the fans. The post revealed that the event had failed to sell 451 tickets, the face value for which amounted to a total of $466K of gate revenue. The official live gate of the event is not available yet, but it will surely make rounds after the conclusion of the event.

Fans could still buy more tickets and make it a packed-up event. Interestingly, most of the tickets that went unsold had been near the ring than the far end of the arena, suggesting either steep prices or fans picking up other activities than watching Alvarez vs. Berlanga. It very well could be the event across the street, UFC 306-Noche UFC. Notably, the UFC 306-Noche UFC turned out to be a sell-out, with record gate revenue crossing $23 million.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga overshadowed by Noche UFC-UFC 306
It wasn’t a hopeful situation where the UFC had listed the lowest prices of the event at $3000 and climbing as high as $12000 with the action taking place inside the Las Vegas Sphere. The UFC believed the unique experience of Sphere on the Mexican Independence Day weekend, along with the curated event of ‘love letter to Mexico’ could sway the fans. While they had to slice the prices twice, they eventually shattered their live gate record and recorded the highest number.
What’s your perspective on:
Canelo Alvarez can't sell out? Is his star power fading, or is Berlanga just not a draw?

WrestleTix pointed out the Sphere setup had 15,410 tickets. Out of which, 15,106 had been sold, excluding the suites. Interestingly, 656 tickets also exchanged hands, suggesting the growing excitement for the event. It seems UFC’s marketing strategy worked, which had a stacked undercard and a fan-favorite Sean O’Malley leading the event.
