Having conquered the 168 lbs division as its undisputed world champion, Canelo Alvarez, will move up to 175 lbs again, and take on WBO titlist Dmitry Bivol on May 7. On his last trip to the light heavyweight unit in 2019, Alvarez had knocked out Sergey Kovalev to gain the WBO belt.
While he dropped down to 168 lbs after that, the Mexican star is back at challenging the light heavyweight kingpins. Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions have secured a two-fight deal with Canelo Alvarez, pitching the prizefighter against Dmitry Bivol at 175 lbs and then Gennady Golovkin at 168 lbs.

Nevertheless, the trilogy clash against GGG is still far from Alvarez’s radar. He will have to beat Bivol primarily and wait until Gennady Golovkin beats Ryota Murata in a middleweight title unification. On meeting all the conditions, Canelo vs GGG 3 will happen. Therefore, all of it will begin with Canelo Alvarez taking on Dmitry Bivol in the upcoming days.
According to Box Rec, the fight is scheduled to happen at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alvarez has had several of his blockbuster nights in Las Vegas. However, he hasn’t appeared in T-Mobile Arena since his last fight against Daniel Jacobs in 2019.

That said, Alvarez has been in T-Mobile Arena five times, which started with him knocking out Amir Khan in 2016. While he will return to the location after years, a scrap against Dmitry Bivol will clearly be intriguing for the entire boxing fraternity. The venue has a reported seating capacity of 20,000 for combat events. That said, a Canelo Alvarez showdown may see T-Mobile Arena get Housefull on the scheduled date. Well, another report cites the fight to be happening in Dubai. So, the venue is still not official for the fight.

Alvarez is currently on a flawless run and seems invincible under several parameters. But Dmitry Bivol can offer him a tough time. The Russian star holds a pro record of 19-0and has already defended his light heavyweight straps ten times. It is equal to the number of times Deontay Wilder had defended his heavyweight belt before losing it to Tyson Fury in 2020.
