The self-proclaimed ‘Face of Boxing’ Canelo Alvarez will return to the ring. The Mexican champ is finally free from his contract with DAZN and can now fight again. He will take on Englishman Callum Smith in a high-profile super middleweight fight.
Smith is the current WBA and Ring Magazine champion, while Canelo is a 4-division champion. Therefore, this sets things up for a fiery end of the year event. So let’s take a closer look at the fight.
Canelo Alvarez is coming off a long break, having fought Sergey Kovalev back in November 2019. However, the Mexican has been fit and training and was ready to make a comeback at any time.

If his training videos are anything to go by, he seems to have sharpened his skills. Furthermore, he has been training body-shots in the gym which could be a teaser of his game-plan.
Smith on the other hand is also coming off a year out of the sport after his win against John Ryder.
The undefeated champion has the height and reach advantage over Canelo and has also been training since his last fight. Hence, it has been possible for him to accept the short-notice fight.
His power is unquestionable at this weight. He will be a big threat to Alvarez. The scouser’s style of boxing of walking down his opponents could well be an under-rated weapon in the fight.

Our prediction for the Canelo Alvarez vs Callum Smith fight
Despite all of Callum Smith’s advantages going into the fight, we think Canelo Alvarez will win via decision. It will come after 12 rounds of scintillating boxing. However, the Mexican will win for the following reasons: He has already fought fighters as big as Callum Smith and had no problem dealing with them. Furthermore, his experience in the ring with the names he has fought will serve him very well.
Although Smith will not be as easy a fight as Rocky Fielding, it could feature very similar tactics from Canelo. There is no saying that Smith doesn’t have the power to knock out Canelo; however, his speed and head-movement will cause the Englishman some problems. It could be very similar to the Daniel Jacobs fight, where Canelo’s head-movement was on another level.
Despite this, Callum Smith is an undefeated champion and will not make it an easy fight. However, we feel that he is yet to be tested at the level that Alvarez can push his opponents. It will be interesting to see how he copes with the Mexican’s body shots. Either way, this is going to be a cracking fight and one that you just can not miss.
