Mexican boxing phenom, Canelo Alvarez, got the first defeat of his career sometime back after he lost to Floyd Mayweather in 2013. However, Alvarez is not among those who accept a defeat. He was like a battered lion with scars and bruises from his previous battle. But he just faced off against the mighty Gennady Golovkin, and he emerged triumphant after putting on one outstanding performance. The hurt lion, though, needs to rest right now.

Canelo Alvarez retained his undisputed super-middleweight title by defeating Gennady Golovkin. However, while talking in a post-fight press conference, he revealed, “It hurts everywhere. I’ve had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight so I was like ‘it’s okay, later, later’.”
He further added, “And then I started [to feel] really bad, I need surgery. It was really bad, really bad. It’s not broken it’s a meniscus, it’s a wrist injury, not broken. It’s ligaments, like a knee injury or something like that… I’m going to take the time my body needs.”
Canelo Alvarez has revealed that he’s had an injury to his left wrist (a TFCC tear) since the Caleb Plant fight and now needs surgery on it following the Gennady Golovkin trilogy win. He said he’ll take his time and is unsure if his next fight will be May or September 2023.

“Last year I fought four times in 11 months, so that’s why. But I need to take my time a little bit, maybe May, September I need to take my time.”
Golovkin and Alvarez had already shared the squared circle twice. The outcome of the first match was a hotly contested tie. They subsequently faced off again a year later, with the Mexican coming out on top.
However, the greatest of the two was supposed to be decided by the trilogy. And Saul Alvarez showed his resolve to win. But the issue still remains: Will his match with Dmitry Bivol take place? Or will the injury prevent the duel?
What is next for Canelo Alvarez?
The Mexican’s match with the Kazakh was a highly anticipated one. But there’s another match-up much more exciting than this one: Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol rematch. The Russian pulled the biggest upset in boxing as he defeated the Mexican king in May this year. It was certain that there needs to be a rematch.

Both Alvarez and Bivol had given positive responses about a potential rematch. But Alvarez’s injury might become a big hurdle, and the fight won’t be happening any time soon. However, it is a match that the masses want to witness. After all, it will give Alvarez the opportunity to redeem his previous loss.
Regardless, the boxer has achieved a lot in the sport and hence, earned his well-deserved rest. What do you think?
