A decade-long business association ended acrimoniously. In 2020, Canelo Alvarez parted ways with Oscar De La Hoya‘s promotional company Golden Boy Promotions, citing a breach of his 11-fight $365 million fight contract signed in 2018. The breakdown of the relationship between Alvarez and De La Hoya culminated in a lawsuit, with the former seeking $280 million in damages. Since the ugly breakup, both have leveled several accusations against each other, adding fuel to what is now a long-running feud.
‘Canelo’ built his reputation under Golden Boy Promotions, fighting heavy hitters like Gennady Golovkin, Floyd Mayweather, and Miguel Cotto, and winning multiple world championships across many weight divisions. However, Alvarez feels he would have had a better success story if he had handed the reins to his current promoter, Al Haymon‘s PBC, at the beginning of his career. While in a conversation on the MILLION DOLLAZ WORTH OF GAME podcast, the unified super-middleweight champion added another chapter to the bitter rivalry with his former promoter.

During the appearance on the podcast alongside his upcoming opponent Edgar Berlanga, Canelo was asked, “When you chose Oscar (Golden Boy) over PBC (back then)…do you think if you would of chose PBC (you would be a bigger star now)?” The Mexican champion promptly responded with, “I think I would have done way better with PBC.”
“I did good things with Golden Boy. I’m not mad with that, but I would’ve been better with PBC. I like to work with everybody, but right now I’m working with PBC. I’m glad to do business with Al Haymon,” Canelo emphasized, taking a subtle dig at De La Hoya’s management of his career.
Nonetheless, Canelo is already two fights into his three-fight deal with the PBC. His upcoming fight with Edgar Berlanga on September 14 will make it his third fight under the PBC banner. Now, it remains to be seen whether Alvarez will negotiate a new contract with his current promotion. On the other hand, recently, Oscar De La Hoya accused Canelo Alvarez of pricing himself out of big-money fights with top-notch contenders like David Benavidez and Terence Crawford.

Lately, Canelo has given the most sought-after matchmaker in boxing, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, the snub when he came to him with the offer for a potential Terence Crawford match in February next year. When the Saudi Royal was snubbed, Alalshikh publically proclaimed that they would not waste their time trying to put together a Canelo Álvarez event anymore. On that note, De La Hoya slammed Alvarez, calling him an “arrogant piece of sh*t”

“So it turns out I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t. Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him and isn’t entertaining any deals to be done with him. Why? Because he’s outpriced himself so much that the Saudis don’t even want to deal with him,” he stated in a video message on X.

Additionally, the Olympic gold medalist also hinted that his upcoming fight with Edgar Berlanga on November 15 could be a PPV disaster as it will be going up against UFC 306 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, sponsored by none other than HE Turki Alalshikh himself. He ended the video message by saying that Canelo was making “the wrong enemies.”
