Since the inception of boxing, various regulatory authorities have tried to make the sport as fair as possible. But it has never been clean. Fighters somehow always find a loophole to bend the rules and tip the scales a bit in their favor.
Doping has been in boxing for a very long time. However, in the past few years, it has been prevalent. Stars like Ryan Garcia, Robert Helenius, Dennis McCann, and more recently Conor Benn have been in the limelight due to doping cases. In a conversation with FightHype, Canelo Álvarez‘s former sparring partner Sena Agbeko revealed the ugly truth behind doping and demanded respect for someone like Floyd Mayweather, who has been clean his whole career.

Canelo Alvarez’s massive PR campaign after PED fiasco
While talking about Conor Benn’s doping case, and no statement by either the boxer or Eddie Hearn, Agbeko claimed that it has always been the case with big boxers. He referred to the time he spent in Canelo Alvarez’s camp, where he sparred 80 times with the unified super middleweight champion. He exclaimed, “I was in the Canelo camp at one point Canelo tested for Clenbuterol and he was suspended for what six months,” referring to the positive doping test Canelo suffered during the Gennady Golovkin fight.

Agbeko then praised the Guadalajara native’s team and how they managed the whole situation. “Ofcourse, his PR team did a great job. They came back with him tainted. That is something that has already been forgotten about.” For those who need a reminder, Canelo Alvarez’s team argued at the time that the positive test was because of the contaminated meat consumed in Mexico, where the clenbuterol use in livestock has been a documented issue.
While NSAC suspended the boxer for 6 months, Canelo’s PR team made sure to curb the controversy before it became an issue. The rematch with Golovkin eventually happened a few months later and fans forgot all about the ban that Canelo faced just a few months ago. Rather, his PR team turned the controversy around on the ongoing issue of clenbuterol contamination in meat products in certain countries.
Agbeko further mentioned Roy Jones Jr.’s positive test in May 2000 after his light heavyweight title defense against Richard Hall. “Roy Jones Jr has he was busted with everything under the sun everything under the sun. Yet you know Fighters don’t speak about those things when they talk about him,” stated Sena Agbeko, claiming that fans and fighters never talk about this stuff when it comes to these boxers.

Agbeko then shifted his focus to Floyd Mayweather, taking Mayweather’s career as an example of how a boxer must conduct themselves.

Floyd Mayweather: A boxer par excellence
Agbeko exclaimed, “We have fighters like Floyd Mayweather. I can’t say that he ever took anything. I don’t believe that he ever took anything,” claiming that as far as he knew, ‘Money’ never took any kind of drugs. He further claimed that the undefeated boxer achieved everything on his own, yet fans and media always try to discredit whatever he has achieved.

He was disappointed with the fact that boxers who are caught using wicked means to fuel their career “get praised every day and get made out to be these gods of boxing.” On the other hand, people have scrutinized Mayweather his whole life, despite him doing nothing.
However, the Ghanaian agreed that things are not that serious. At the end of the day, fans “don’s care anyways. They are there for the entertainment and the blood, that’s it.” So, if any boxer catches their attention, they will forget his wrongdoings and will support them. It is cruel and unfair. However, it is the nature of boxing that also makes it interesting and lovable all around the world. Let us know your thoughts down below.
