The night is finally here! Mexico’s star fighter Canelo Alvarez will take on his counterpart Jaime Munguia at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. However, moments before the fighters enter the ring, a confession about the Floyd Mayweather fight from Canelo has taken the internet by storm, reminding them how far ‘Cinnamon’ has come.

In September 2013, a young and brilliant Canelo took on ‘Money’ Mayweather, aiming to dethrone the unbeaten star. However, Money’s defence proved too much for Canelo to overcome, as he recorded his first career loss. Nevertheless, as Canelo prepares to entertain the world, his confession about that fight may give a glimpse of what’s to come.

While appearing in the Full Send podcast, shared on YouTube on September 30, the day Canelo defeated Jermell Charlo, the Mexican superstar reflected on his legendary bout with Mayweather. According to Canelo, more than a devastating loss, the Mayweather fight was a learning experience.

He said, “He was the better man that night. He’s a great fighter. But I learned a lot. That’s when I realised, ‘This isn’t gonna stop me, I’m gonna be the best one day’… He’s so smart, he had everything, a complete fighter.” However, the question is, how did the public perceive the fighters? A former ring girl reveals her experience dealing with both boxers back then.

Canelo branded cute, Mayweather labelled arrogant

Speaking to ES News in 2020, Keli, the former ring girl, spoke about Canelo, saying, “He (Canelo) is so cute, doesn’t speak any English at all. And his whole family is always with him. They’re really nice. His wife is really nice. Whatever girl was with him, (she) spoke English and she was very sweet, always nice to the (ring) girls. As far as Golden Boy is concerned, I feel like he definitely is the ultimate Golden Boy.”

On the other hand, when Keli started speaking about Floyd Mayweather, the story was different! She said, “He was like very flashy and kind of arrogant and just putting on his whole Mayweather show and I remember being like ‘who the f**k is this guy?’ without really knowing anything about him.”

With mere moments left in Canelo’s sixty-fifth fight, his hard-hitting confession serves as a stark reminder of his journey through the sport of boxing. More importantly, the adversaries he has faced and how dealt with them. Do you think Canelo would prove too much for Munguia?
