Before demanding a figure as startling as $200 Million for the David Benavidez fight, Canelo Alvarez had stated previously he was uninterested in fighting a fellow Mexican boxer. As a result, the current undisputed Super-Middleweight champion shocked the boxing world when he agreed to face undefeated star Jaime Munguia on May 4, during Cinco De Mayo weekend.
In this context, ahead of the match on May 5th, Canelo Alvarez told TMZ Sports why he changed his mind and agreed to fight a Mexican boxer, Munguia. Additionally, Alvarez explained what made Munguia a “great fighter” in the sport. However, Saul also mentioned he would go for the KO against Jaime in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez just wants to give the Mexican people a good fight
Having stopped John Ryder in the ninth round of his last fight, Jaime Munguia called out Canelo Alvarez. In addition to hoping it would be a “great fight among Mexicans,” Munguia added, “It would be an honor to share the ring with him.” Soon, Canelo Alvarez accepted the match. Now, in an interview with TMZ Sports, Alvarez revealed, “You know it is what it is. I represent Mexico that’s why I try to not fight Mexican fighters.”
“But, at the end of the day, this fight is going to be good for Mexico. So, two Mexicans in the Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas. Everybody’s watching us. So, I’m very proud about it,” Canelo Alvarez explained.
Along these lines, Alvarez said that Jaime Munguia was a commendable opponent as he was strong and threw a lot of punches. In Alvarez’s opinion, he and Munguia share the same mentality and are bound to produce a good fight.
