Currently, a free agent, Canelo Alvarez, could have operated with any promoter after a successful stint at the 168 lbs division. However, he is back with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions and has signed a two-fight deal for his upcoming appearances.
It means Alvarez can possibly spend the entire 2022 in the Matchroom stable. While PBC had also offered him a chance to face WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, Alvarez slid into facing WBA light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol.
In an exclusive chat with FightHype.co, he justified the move and said, “I think that is the best option for me this year. You know, fight with Bivol and then the other fight [GGG 3] you know. But for me, it’s a really good challenge. So, at least to fight. So, it’s the best year for me.”

Alvarez has previously worked with Matchroom Promotions for three fights and has been blessed with lucrative finances. After parting ways with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Canelo took on Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, and then Billy Joe Saunders. All three of these fights were with Hearn’s promotions.
Alvarez grabbed the WBC, WBA, WBO, and Ring titles in that particular phase and also defend them. After that, Canelo Alvarez worked with PBC and took out IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant to become an undisputed titlist at 168 lbs. That said, the ongoing journey with Eddie Hearn can fetch him more accolades.

Hearn has already claimed Alvarez is looking to become an undisputed titleholder in the light heavyweight division. Therefore, Bivol can be his ticket to enter the division full of lethal world champions.

On gaining a win over Bivol, Canelo Alvarez can march towards a trilogy clash against Gennady Golovkin in the 168 lbs division. It can be one of the biggest fights in recent history, putting two absolute legends of the era against each other. Having beaten GGG in the rematch, Alvarez seems viable to repeat it in the trilogy.
Meanwhile, Golovin will unify his middleweight belt with champion Ryota Murata next, it will allow him to challenge Alvarez. Therefore, the trilogy fight depends on how both men will perform in their next, which seems an intriguing way to decide who has more left in their gas tank.
