Canelo Alvarez Reveals Real Reason He Wants Dmitry Bivol Rematch at 175

Canelo Alvarez is one of the greatest talents the sport has witnessed in recent times. Throughout his career, the undisputed super-middleweight champion has been defeated only twice. His first defeat was against Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in September 2013. And more recently, last year, he was defeated by light-heavyweight champion, Dmitry Bivol.

The Mexican fighter went up in weight class from super-middleweight to light-heavyweight as a challenger to face Bivol to claim a championship title in the light-heavyweight division. However, Alvarez fell short as he lost the contest with Bivol via a unanimous decision. However, he is keen to avenge his defeat and wants to fight him in the light heavyweight division itself.

Why does Alvarez want to face Bivol in the light-heavyweight division?

Alvarez has made it evident that he looks forward to competing in his rematch against Bivol at 175lbs itself. He doesn’t want to give the boxing world a chance to make excuses if he beats Bivol by getting him down to 168 lbs. @boxingscene took to Twitter to report Alvarez explicitly stating his reason behind fighting Bivol at 175lbs. 

He stated, “Yes, but everyone will start f——- talking. Everyone is going to f——- start saying, ‘Oh, but he brought him down [in weight]. That’s why [Bivol] lost.” He also points out the contradiction in how the boxing world reacted to his defeat. He added, “Yes, but everyone will start f——- talking. Alvarez is set to face British boxer John Ryder on June 6 in his hometown. Post that, it is speculated by many in the boxing world that the super-middleweight champion would have to face David Benavidez in a mandatory fight. It is unsure when and where Alvarez will fight Bivol but it can be safely said that Alvarez is looking forward to the bout taking place in the light-heavyweight division now.

Bivol lays down his condition for his rematch with Canelo Alvarez

Alvarez has made his desire to compete against Bivol at 175lbs. However, Bivol’s trainer came out to make a public statement that he may want to fight Alvarez at 168 lbs. Since he has defeated the super-middleweight at 175 lbs he wants a “motivating” factor involved to incentivize him to fight Alvarez. His trainer stated, ” “To be honest, I don’t understand why Bivol would want to do it. I mean Bivol already beat him. He’s not as motivated [as before]. It’s not that big of a challenge”

It appears that there is a conflict between the two camps. However, only time can reveal when, where and at which weight the rematch takes place. For now, Alvarez is scheduled to fight Ryder.
