Canelo Alvarez is officially moving up to cruiserweight. This massive update was met with heavy criticism as well as appreciation on social media. While there are many who believe Canelo simply does not have what it takes to compete at cruiserweight, there are also many who are confident in his abilities at any division.
At the recent WBC meet, Canelo Alvarez showed up and faced off with his next opponent, current WBC champion, Ilunga Makabu. He even took time to answer a few burning questions from fans of the sport.

“A year ago, I said no to cruiserweight and here we are. Therefore, I don’t think so, but I don’t know with Eddy sometimes… My body wouldn’t allow that to happen,” said Canelo Alvarez.
Eddie Hearn believes Canelo Alvarez could fight at heavyweight
In a recent interview, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn shared his thoughts on Canelo moving up to cruiserweight. He believes this is a great fight for him that could allow him to add another title to his name. However, he also sees this as a dangerous fight for the p4p king.
“The Makabu fight is a cruiserweight fight that would give him another world championship victory, would get a lot of people talking as it did last night, and I think it’s a good option for him.”
“I think it’s a dangerous fight. I was speaking to Tony Bellew – who could be looking real good in a few months if this happens – and he said that Makabu is a huge puncher, huge puncher, and very strong,” said Eddie Hearn.
Hearn feels that even though a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin could do wonders in terms of PPV sales, that may not be a fight that truly interests Canelo. Instead, he sees Alvarez also heading towards the light-heavyweight undisputed crown.

He then even added Saul Alvarez could simply go further up and fight someone like Oleksandr Usyk, who is not a traditional heavyweight.

“Listen, he could move up and fight at heavyweight. I mean, Usyk’s not a massive heavyweight, Trevor Bryant’s a world champion as well. Can he compete against those guys?” Hearn added.
