David Benavidez is not going to be happy once he hears what Canelo Alvarez just said about why their fight never happened. And honestly? When you find out, you might sit back and ask yourself—is Canelo serious? Is it the pressure of his upcoming May 3rd fight against William Scull, where he’s set to fight for the undisputed super middleweight title? Probably not. Everyone knows he’s the heavy favorite, and let’s be real—he’s expected to handle El Indomable without much trouble. So why the sudden strange comments?
Just last month, he defended his WBC Interim Light Heavyweight title against David Morrell, officially making him the mandatory challenger for Dmitry Bivol under WBC. But getting here? It wasn’t easy. And guess who played a major role in that? Canelo Alvarez. He waited for almost a year holding the Interim WBC super middleweight title, ready to fight, but the Guadalajara native? Silence. No response, no fight, nothing. Tired of waiting, Benavidez moved up to 175 lbs—and he’s been thriving. But now, Canelo is trying to flip the script, putting the blame on the 28-year-old.

Canelo Alvarez calls out David Benavidez for disrespecting everyone
Earlier today, Brian Mazique of FightHype sat down in a Zoom meeting with the unified Super Middleweight champion. Canelo Alvarez didn’t hold back when asked about the 30-0 boxer’s relentless pursuit of a fight with him. When Mazique brought it up, you could almost sense the frustration in Canelo Alvarez’s response.
At first, he hesitated. “I don’t really know how to answer this question,” he admitted. But then, he got straight to the point—Benavidez rubs him the wrong way. “The way he talks, he thinks he’s Superman,” the future Hall of Famer said, clearly unimpressed. But it wasn’t just about David Benavidez’s confidence—it was about respect. Or, in the 34-year-old’s eyes, the lack of it. “He’s very disrespect, not just with me, with everybody,” the 62-2 boxer complained. And it doesn’t end there.

September 14, 2024, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA: SAUL CANELO ALVAREZ 62-2-2-39KOs of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico defeats EDGAR BERLANGA 22-1-17KOs of Brooklyn, NY by a unanimous decision 118-109, 117-110, 118-109 during PBC on Prime boxing at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Las Vegas USA – ZUMAo117 20240914_zsp_o117_127 Copyright: xMikaelxOnax
Then came the real sting—Canelo Alvarez questioned whether David Benavidez had even earned the right to call him out in the first place. “He has accomplished nothing. He’s not even a champion. And he’s not even in my weight class already.” To Canelo, the whole situation just didn’t add up.
But the most telling part? Canelo Alvarez reminded everyone exactly who he is. “This point in my career, I can do whatever I want,” he said confidently. Plus, he made one more thing crystal clear. No one can question his legacy. “You see my resume, I fought everybody out there. All the elite fighters out there. So I’m very good with my resume.” In other words, he doesn’t feel like he owes Benavidez—or anyone else—anything.
However, looks like David Benavidez is done waiting around for Canelo Alvarez. That chapter? Closed. He’s moved on to a new page—one that promises real action and the respect he’s earned the hard way, brick by brick.

David Benavidez eyes a September return
DAZN’s Patricia Duong caught up with David Benavidez in Hollywood, Florida, where he was checking out the recent BKFC event. And of course, the conversation quickly turned to one of the hottest topics in boxing right now—Jake Paul calling out Anthony Joshua. David Benavidez, who recently sat down with Paul on his podcast BS w/ Jake Paul, didn’t shy away from giving his take. “I think it’s a good fight if they can make it happen,” he said, pointing out that Paul’s superstardom and Joshua’s status as a former champ would make for a massive event.
But that wasn’t the only big fight on his radar. Patricia then asked him about the rumored showdown with Dmitry Bivol. “So right now we’re trying to negotiate the fight; it might be in the works for September,” David Benavidez explained. But he didn’t sound too convinced.
“But we don’t know. You know everything in boxing is not 100%,” he admitted. “We’re just going to keep trying to negotiate the fight, and if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. But that’s the one we’re trying to make happen.” So, will we see David Benavidez vs. Dmitry Bivol in September? Time will tell. But for now, negotiations are still up in the air.
