There is a reason Canelo Alvarez holds a cult following in Mexico. He is not a mere boxer for his fellow compatriots but also an idol, who is a complete boxer, a complete family man, and a complete businessman who gives back to the community. And it seems he will bolster his image further after he signs up for the world’s biggest boxing class.

Alvarez, 34, and the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman adorned the traditional press conference, ‘Mananera’, offered by the Mexican President. Claudia Sheinbaum, who holds the position now, received the felicitation by the two prominent names in the boxing world. They handed her a WBC belt, signed by the unified super middleweight champion. The belt was a token of their appreciation for the Mexican President, who has pushed for the popularity of the sweet science and staged multiple events to enhance its reach among the masses.

One of those events has been a mass boxing class. It was Sheinbaum’s initiative as Head of Government of Mexico City. It was staged in 2022 for the first time, where it attracted a crowd of 14,299. Interestingly, the event held a Guinness world record, which produced even better numbers of over 30,000 the very next year, albeit in an unofficial event. There will be a similar event on the calendar for April 6 next year on a national level now to shatter the previous records. And who is better than Alvarez, at 62-2-2, to do it?
