Canelo Alvarez teases a huge announcement as he celebrates his journey as a champion that started exactly 13 years ago, on March 5, 2011. It has been a rapid surge, and he continues to entertain fans and put on splendid shows for them. But what’s next? Who is he fighting on May 4 as his traditional Cinco de Mayo fight? It seems fans won’t have to wait longer for the answers.
Starting his professional career at 15, Alvarez clinched the WBC light middleweight strap as he edged out Matthew Hatton on the judges’ scorecards. Since then, he has held multiple world championships in four weight classes, from light middleweight to light heavyweight, becoming the face of boxing. The accolades are numerous, but fans are currently waiting for the announcement of his next opponent. The champion has dropped hints to “expect news soon.”

The Mexican champion can be heard pouring his heart out and extending his gratitude to his team in a video uploaded by Fight Hub TV. He has devoted 20 years of his life to boxing since he first stepped into the square circle at 13. Alvarez said, “Hello everyone. I’m grateful to my team, Eddy Reynoso, who has been with me since I started in this sport. I have over 20 years in this sport, 19 professional [years], and today I celebrated 13 years since winning my first world championship.” Right after this, he spoke about his plans next.

“Very proud, very content. I hope to continue giving you satisfaction. 13 years fighting at the top level too. I feel very proud and hope to continue giving you good fights. Expect news soon, and [I’m] grateful to all of you. Thank you very much,” the 33-year-old added. The announcement will most likely put the saga of his May 4 opponent to rest. Jermall Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and David Benavidez have been inserted into the conversation, but with no concrete follow-up. Moreover, the recent reports of the 60-2-2 record holder’s split with the PBC over the disagreement over the fight purse and the Benavidez fight have puzzled the fans and worsened the situation.

However, recent reports suggest Alvarez and the PBC are back in talks. Munguia will have his shot first as he rides on the momentum of a KO win over Jack Ryder. The elder of the Charlo twins might have to wait for his revenge fight until September. Meanwhile, ‘The Mexican Monster’ is out of the title frame at 168. Therefore, he will venture out to the light heavyweight division to take on Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June.
