Is Canelo Alvarez truly the face of boxing, or is Jeff Mayweather right about David Benavidez?

Does Canelo Alvarez have the right to pick and choose his opponents in boxing? Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and boxing coach Jeff Mayweather claims Canelo has earned the right to do so. The Mexican superstar is coming off a unanimous decision win over Puerto Rican boxer Edgar Berlanga on Saturday in Las Vegas.

While it turned out to be an entertaining affair, the fight most fans really wanted doesn’t have any signs of becoming a reality. After seeing a lack of tough competitors fighting him, people have expressed their desire to see Canelo take on boxers like David Benavidez and Terence Crawford, who have a better chance of giving Canelo a tough fight. Regardless, Jeff Mayweather feels Canelo can do whatever he wants, especially after Canelo’s last fight.

In a discussion with the veteran trainer, a reporter from The Mayweather Channel inquired about Canelo Alvarez’s decision to not fight the opponents fans are clamoring for. Jeff responded with confidence, saying, “I think he’s earned that right. I mean he’s the face of boxing, right now, so…” He further added, “And obviously, tonight when you make people pay 90 dollars to watch pay-per-view with a card that wasn’t that great, well that says a lot.” It’s worth noting that most fights in the undercard of Canelo vs. Berlanga were lacking in action.

Rolly Romero crawled his way to a unanimous decision win. Meanwhile, the Erislandy Lara vs. Danny Garcia fight had many in the community asking for the duo to retire. While the Caleb Plant vs. Trevor McCumby fight turned out to be action-packed, it failed to justify the $89 price tag for the night. Even Canelo’s win over Berlanga was an expected outcome that most people saw coming.

That said, Canelo Alvarez might be eyeing an exciting matchup after all.

Have an interesting take?

The Mexican superstar seems to be eager for a rematch against Dmitry Bivol after the former super middleweight champion lost their first encounter back in May 2022. The defeat has always bothered the Mexican legend, as it’s also a blemish on his record. It’s worth mentioning that Canelo had attributed this loss to an injury he suffered.

However, he is confident a second shot at the Russian boxer will get him the win. “Look, I know I can beat him. I’m a better fighter,” Mike Coppinger reiterated what Canelo told him. Still, to set this fight up, Bivol first has to beat Artur Beterbiev on September 12th. If Bivol comes out the winner, it’s unlikely he would refuse a second massive payday.

As far as Canelo is concerned, his comments about his career express his resolve. “I just want to show everyone that I’m still the best. I still love this sport. When I stop loving it, you’ll know,” Alvarez said in a press conference.

Having said that, it appears while most people aren’t happy with the quality of opponents, Canelo Alvarez has been facing, the Mexican legend may soon fight Dmitry Bivol, which is without a doubt a big fight. Would you watch that?
