Is Canelo Alvarez dodging real competition by choosing easy opponents like Edgar Berlanga?

Unified champion Canelo Alvarez had a near-perfect outing against Edgar Berlanga on Saturday, September 14, in Las Vegas. He broke down the challenger methodically before securing a win by unanimous decision over the 12 rounds. It was a testament to Canelo’s greatness and proof that age is not affecting him at all. But the buildup to the Berlanga fight was nothing but smooth. Many experts and fans started claiming that Alvarez just wanted to fight for a bigger payout rather than look for good opponents who could challenge him. With his next opponent still not decided, Showbizz stated the same and claimed that the unified champion only wants easy fights now.

The musical artist expressed his views regarding Canelo and the champions’ mindset. According to Showbizz, even though Canelo wants the headlines and spotlight, he does not want to work hard for it. “Canelo wants to fight, but he doesn’t want to have to fight. Because he’s been fighting his whole life. He loves the fight, game and he is a narcissist. He loves the attention, he loves the crowd, he loves to be called great, and he loves his name being screamed loud. So that’s why he is moving like that,” stated the musical artist in his boxing podcast.

Showbizz further claimed that Alvarez is handpicking his opponents so that he can get big payouts but does not pose any threat to his reign. “He is hand picking styles that make it action-packed, but Tailormade for him to not to fight. And the thing is he is great and he is like, ‘haven’t I done enough to now just put on shows.” The boxing reporter was not undermining any challengers but was stating that the fighting style makes it easy for Alvarez to counter. And every opponent that the Guadalajara resident is selecting promises a big payout for him.

Amidst all the controversies and statements, fans are desperately waiting for Canelo’s next fight. A new opponent is not yet decided, but a few names have been mentioned that have grasped the attention.

The next challenge for Canelo Alvarez

The two potential fights for Canelo that have grabbed everyone’s attention are Terence Crawford and Dmitry Bivol. Crawford has ruled the middleweight division for as long as you can imagine. The undefeated fighter is  36 years old now and is looking to close off his career with a fight against Alvarez. ‘Bud’ has called out Alvarez numerous times and did not waste any time to lay another challenge after the fight against Berlanga concluded. If Alvarez wants to put on a show, a fight against Crawford might be the way to go. But, the super middleweight champion is looking at a different opponent to complete his revenge.

Have an interesting take?

In his two-decade-long career, there are only two blips in Alvarez’s career. His first loss against Floyd Mayweather, which he can’t avenge now. But there is still a chance for him to avenge his loss against Bivol. Alvarez was not at his best against Bivol as he was marred with injuries. Alvarez still believes that he is the better fighter between the two and has expressed his views for a rematch. The timing is not right at the moment as Bivol is scheduled to face Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed crown on October 12. If Bivol turns out victorious, we might see this grudge match become a reality.
