Has Canelo Alvarez become a disgrace to boxing with his latest fight choices?

Canelo Alvarez doesn’t want to do the one fight fans want him to! The Mexican boxing legend is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jaime Munguia in May, and there’s been much speculation about who he will face next. Most fans obviously want him to square off against his WBC mandatory David Benavidez, but recent reports suggest he could be facing WBA No.1 contender Edgar Berlanga or former middleweight champion Jermall Charlo.

There have been other contenders for a fight against Canelo like William Scull, who is Canelo’s IBF mandatory challenger. Yet, a tweet from ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez suggests that Berlanga or Charlo seem more likely. This update, shared on X by talkSport editor Michael Benson, has put fans in a really bad mood today!

Canelo Alvarez may still fight on Mexican Independence Day

Earlier today, Benson wrote on X, “Canelo Alvarez’s next fight reportedly could be vs Edgar Berlanga or Jermall Charlo – Sept 14th remains a possible date, though he may end up fighting a few weeks later.” However, there are a few issues with this update! First of all, Jermall Charlo, whose twin brother faced Canelo last September, has expressed his desire to retire from the sport while apologizing to Caleb Plant for the slap fiasco.

Second, not too long ago, Mike Coppinger of ESPN suggested that Canelo may avoid fighting on Mexican Independence this time around due to UFC 306 (Riyadh Season Noche UFC) and may fight later in the year as a tune-up for Terence Crawford next year, a fight which would be organized by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh. So, there seem to be several contradicting reports on what will be Canelo’s next step. Regardless, the tweet from Benson managed to leave fans outraged with the possibility of the Mexican facing Berlanga or Charlo instead of David Benavidez.

Canelo sidesteps while still seeking the spotlight

In all regards, Canelo Alvarez is the current GOAT of boxing—he will go down in history as one of the greatest. But! His decision to avoid Benavidez has caused his name to be dragged through the mud. Look at this comment from a user, who said Canelo is basically fighting a bunch of nobodies, and despite that people think he is the best out there. Is he the best? Of course, he is, but avoiding Benavidez is the single worst decision of his career.

Or consider this comment, who pointed out Canelo would fight anybody but Benavidez. For a future Hall of Famer, such public opinion not only looks bad but also stains his legacy.

The next user was even more brutal, who outright called the Mexican boxing legend “duck”, and that too in the most savage way possible. Perhaps, that’s what happens when you demand $200 million to fight your mandatory challenger.

If being called a duck wasn’t enough, this user called Canelo something even worse. What? A disgrace to boxing! This was uncalled for since Canelo has contributed so much to boxing.

Meanwhile, this user simply claimed that he would just avoid Canelo’s next fight like he did the last two. This comment single-handedly shows the fleeting interest not just in Canelo fights, but in boxing as a whole.

Alright, is Canelo Alvarez a disgrace to the sport of boxing? Absolutely, not! People often forget that he has already faced fighters like Floyd Mayweather, Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Dmitry Bivol, and many more great boxers—he just wants a big payday like anybody else putting their life on the line. What do you think? Would you watch if Canelo Alvarez fights Edgar Berlanga or Jermall Charlo?
