After coming so far from his first defeat, Canelo could not forget what he felt that night. Speaking to actor Eugenio Derbez, the undisputed super-middleweight champ reflected on it.
“I didn’t take it as a loss. Afterward, I took it as an apprenticeship. I still didn’t have the experience to fight in those scenarios. It was a really boring fight” against “the best fighter in the world.”
Canelo continued, “It hurt a lot that night. But the next day, I told myself that this would not take anything away from my goal of being the best. In boxing, I’m the second Mexican in history who managed to become the best pound for pound.”
Notably, when Canelo faced Mayweather he was very young. Lack of experience was quite visible throughout the fight. However, on the judge’s scorecard, the Mexican superstar gave a very competitive fight.
Mayweather’s defense played a vital role in the contest. It neutralized Canelo’s wild swings.
