Can Bohachuk really match the greatness of Canelo and GGG, or is his promoter dreaming?

Vergil Ortiz Jr. defeated Serhii Bohachuk last weekend via a majority decision at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. However, Bohachuk’s promoter Tom Loeffler is convinced his fighter had done enough to defend his WBC interim super lightweight title, which he revealed on social media not too long ago. This has prompted Ortiz’s trainer Robert Garcia to rope in Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin to explain why Loeffler is wrong.

The bout itself was a neck-to-neck battle. While Bohachuk had dropped Ortiz in the first and eighth rounds, the latter had made a quick comeback with volume punches each time. Not to mention, he utterly dominated the bout in the last two rounds when he staggered Bohachuk with a brutal left hook. Regardless, this didn’t stop Loeffler from sharing a clip of Bohachuk from his after party, and making some really bold statements in the process.

A couple of days after the fight concluded, Loeffler hopped on X to write, “Serhii arriving at his after Fight Party like the Champion that he is, face looking clean as he rolled with many punches”. In contrast, the man who once promoted the legendary ‘GGG’ added that Vergil Ortiz’s face looked bruised and battered because of the fight.

However, he changes tone in the next sentence, writing, “Credit to both fighters for putting on a great fight for the fans,” claiming he and his team agree that Serhii should have been given the win, especially because of the two knockdowns he scored. He then takes another jab at Ortiz and Garcia, writing, “Credit to Vergil and Robert Garcia” for putting up a great fight.

And also Loeffler mentioned Ortiz’s cutman, crediting him for being able to keep Ortiz in the game despite “busted nose and swollen eyes” Ortiz suffered during the fight. Finally, the promoter couldn’t help but finish his statement with another jab at Ortiz. He wrote, “Vergil was still at the hospital for observation after they released Serhii to enjoy his after party”.

It’s worth mentioning that after the fight, Robert Garcia had revealed that both fighters were sent to the hospital by the Nevada boxing commission as a precaution. Regardless, reacting to the tweet from Loeffler today, Garcia adopted the rule of tit for tat. “Yeah, the same media that’s there at his after party. Just a coincidence, I’m sure Tom. Either way great fight. But fights aren’t scored by how your face looks after the fight”, Garcia wrote.

This wasn’t the end, though. Garcia further added, “I’m sure you thought GGG won all those Canelo fights but his face would say otherwise if this is true”. Notably, Tom Loeffler promoted Gennady Golovkin when he fought Canelo Alvarez in their epic trilogy. While their first bout ended with a majority decision draw, Canelo took the second one with a close margin.

However, in the third fight, Canelo overpowered a slowed ‘GGG’. Regardless, at the end of the day, both Loeffler and Garcia would support their own boxers. To get a clear idea about who landed more shots, let’s look at the actual numbers from the fight.

Bohachuk also scored another knockdown in the eighth round, but Ortiz came back strong with 16 power punches compared to Bohachuk’s 11. Over the last few rounds, Ortiz really turned it up, landing 112 punches to Bohachuk’s 89. In the championship rounds, Ortiz landed 56 punches while Bohachuk managed only 40. When the judges made their calls, one scored it a 113-113 draw, but the other two had Ortiz winning 114-112. So, Ortiz snagged the WBC Interim World Super Welterweight Championship!

Having said that, even the official numbers seem to point at Vergil Ortiz Jr. winning the bout. But here’s the silver lining: all this talk and drama may force a rematch in the future. And given the action packed nature of the bout, who wouldn’t want to see these two warriors fight again?
