It’s a lopsided match, whichever way you look at it. But it doesn’t mean there is a clear-cut winner out there. It’s a clash between a younger fighter in the nascent stage of his career and an experienced fighter who has gone through a rollercoaster ride of success and slump. So, will Cameron Vuong march ahead on his winning streak and make him stand out as a contender rather than a prospect? Or will Gavin Gwynne finally try to reach the world title stage with a win?
The fans will find it out when the two boxers fight it out on November 30 at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, in the Matchroom event headlined by Sunny Edwards vs. Galal Yafai. The fight on the undercard has the potential to seize the eyeballs, as the two will put their careers on the line, and a win would propel the victor into serious title considerations. But before they take center stage, let’s have a look at how they stack up.

If there is one skill that Gwynne has honed to perfection, he can bounce back strongly after a loss. If you look at his career, the losses have been far fewer, but whenever he went through these, he turned around his career by reinventing himself. The Wales native is coming off a loss against Mark Chamberlain, where he suffered a damaged orbital bone, which led to his stoppage defeat. But you can expect him to do what he does best and come back strong. How is he going to do it?

Well, it’s his fighting style. He is your relentless puncher, who adds more lethalness to his weapons with a high work rate. Gwynne’s coming forward and fan-friendly style allow him to overwhelm his opponents. It’s no wonder he collected the British championship, the Commonwealth title, and European glory. He boasts an impressive record of 17-3-1 with 5 KOs. While the 34-year-old is aggressive on the front and likes to be busy, his lack of power forces him to take the fight to distance. The same is evidenced by his KO ratio of 29.41%.
When you also factor in Gwynne’s height of 6’0″ (183 cm), you can realize how dangerous of a fighter he is in the ring. His height and reach allow him to do damage without going too deep and close. But will it be enough?

Meanwhile, Vuong, 22, is the younger of the two and has fewer fights under his belt. Despite making his pro debut only a year ago, he surged through the rankings and has already collected a perfect record of 6-0 with 3 KOs with a KO ratio of 50%. While the sample size is small, you can categorize him as a dynamic and calculative fighter. But you can also see some flashes in between as he continues to mold himself into a better boxer. Undoubtedly, the Blyth native has a strong technical foundation, is swift on his feet, and is sharp with his punches.
However, other details such as height and reach for Vuong are not available on the main websites. But he does have a task in hand with weight cutting, as he weighed 139.3 lbs (63.2 kg) in his last fight, compared to Gwynne’s 134.6 lbs (61.1 kg). It’s a fight with a lightweight limit of 135, so it remains to be seen how it affects his performance.

It seems Vuong already has a blueprint laid out for him to defeat Gwynne. Joe Cordina was the first to stop Gwynne with his jab and footwork. It gels well with Vuong’s style, which allows him to land clean, strategic punches with a focus on controlling the fight’s pace. Precision is the word you can associate with Vuong’s style. Interestingly, he closely follows his gymmate, Jack Catterall, who has a similar tactical approach to fighting.

Meanwhile, Gwaynne tends to impose his will using his size and conditioning. But there are holes in his game too, leaving him open to counters, and that’s the reason he has a couple of defeats on his resume. But he also has the experience to nullify whatever Vuong brings into the ring. Whereas the latter’s age, youth, activity, and stylistic matchup give him a marginal edge in the contest. It all depends on whether Gwaynne can force him into exchanges and whether Vuong can replicate what Cordina did earlier. It’s anyone’s game, but you can’t dismiss Gwaynne’s experience and stamina.
