Despite having a severe disadvantage in height and reach, 5’8” Canelo Alvarez outpointed a 6’3” Callum Smith throughout the 12 rounds of their fight for the WBA and WBC (vacant) super-middleweight titles.
It was a lopsided show from Alvarez, who secured the win via decision on a margin of 119-109, 119-109, and 117-111.
Although he couldn’t stop Callum Smith in the ring, it wasn’t only a tactical showdown. Alvarez dealt some serious damage, which was prominent on Smith’s left hand.

After the long fight, ‘Mundo’ suffered a serious injury on his left arm. There was a massive sore, and it depicted how hard Alvarez was hitting him.
It was absolutely intentional and Alvarez wanted to damage Smith’s left arm.
After the fight, Smith connected with Boxing Social and revealed that he knew Alvarez’s intentions from the very beginning. He even mentioned the same to his corner.
‘Mundo’ said, “It was intentional. I knew from the first round that. I said to Joe in round one, ‘He’s aiming for my arm.’ Every right hook he was throwing, he was going for my arm.”
He added, “And then I think I said to Joe in round four or something, ‘My arm is f***ed.”
Reporter Michael Benson also clarified that Alvarez intentionally put those shots to curb Smith’s defensive abilities. This showed fans how Canelo nullified certain disadvantages at the Alamodome.
Canelo has revealed he deliberately targeted Callum Smith's left arm as he knew the counter hook was one of his strengths.
Smith suffered a serious injury as a result and said: "In the twelfth round he looked at the swelling, laughed and asked, 'Is it sore?'" [@Boxing_Social] pic.twitter.com/xrR1EDYKfn
