Does Caleb Plant's walkout music give him an edge, or is it just for show?

Bad blood has set the tone for the showdown between Caleb Plant and Trevor McCumby on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight card. Plant is particularly vexed by accusations of “quitting” leveled against him by Trevor McCumby. ‘Sweethands’ is now counting down the clock, and is itching to punch McCumby’s face up in the boxing ring. Furthermore, he has a chip on his shoulder to improve his standing in the super-middleweight division after he suffered two defeats in his last three fights.

“For him to say that, it’s like what? We’ll see who quits on the 14th,” Plant warned his opponent, ahead of the highly anticipated showdown. As Plant looks forward to “some good old-fashioned a** whooping” on fight night, let’s explore some of Caleb Plant’s iconic walkout songs that provided the soundtrack as he walked up to the ring to engage in a battle of fists with his opponents.

On March 25, 2023, in the showdown for the interim WBC super-middleweight title, Caleb Plant made his way into the ring confidently to the upbeat hip-hop soundtrack called “Where Yo Money At” by the late rap legend Nipsey Hussle with a feature from Pacman. A talented rap artist, Nipsey, energized the west-coast hip hop scene with his inspirational soundtracks. Unfortunately, his life was cut short abruptly in March 2019 when he was shot dead in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing, in South Central Los Angeles. Plant paid tribute to the late artist on fight night against Benavidez, even mouthing the lines of the song as he walked up to the ring.

However, the night turned out to be an unlucky one for Caleb Plant, as he suffered a unanimous decision loss to David Benavidez. ‘Sweethands’ gave a tough battle to Benavidez, but in the end, he suffered the second defeat of his professional career. The judges scored the fight 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111, in favor of Benavidez, who remained undefeated in his career and retained the status of being the mandatory challenger for Canelo‘s WBC belt.

On November 6, 2021, Caleb Plant walked out to the squared circle for the most important bout of his life, going up against the then-unified super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. He made sure that his ring walk was special as the New York-based rapper Conway the Machine walked him out as audio clips of Muhammad Ali played in the background. Conway performed one of his songs “Fear of God” while Plant made his entrance wearing all-white.

Being a hip-hop fanatic, the Tennessee native is friends with the rap artist. “Yeah, Conway, that’s my brother right there. I had him at the last fight (Canelo Alvarez fight)… He’s gone on to be one of the greatest MCs of this generation,” Plant stated in one of the media interviews.

However, the euphoria of his epic walkout was met with a crushing defeat. It was a humbling experience for Caleb Plant as Canelo Alvarez slowly broke him down as the fight progressed. In the eleventh round, Canelo finished Plant with a vicious barrage of punches after scoring a knockdown with an uppercut. In the process, Plant lost his IBF super-middleweight title, and Canelo Alvarez became the undisputed super-middleweight champion.
