It’s been slightly more than a year since Caleb Plant has seen action inside the ring. While there are no inklings of him entering the ring anytime soon, he did tease a little bit about his comeback that fans and sports analysts alike have been clamoring for a while. As he did that, he had a few things to say about his former opponents, Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez.

In his last stint in the ring against ‘The Mexican Monster’ in March 2023, Plant suffered his career’s second loss via a unanimous decision. In the wake of the devastating loss, he sought a rematch, which has not materialized to date. His first loss, however, came at the hands of Canelo Alvarez in 2021, when he was dropped to the canvas twice in the 11th round. Having seen the might of these two fighters, he seemed like the right person to ask about their recent back-and-forth.

Fight Hype, a boxing publication nudged ‘Sweethands’ to express his views on the upcoming May 4th fight between Canelo Alvarez and his Mexican counterpart, Jaime Munguia. Convinced that the undisputed super middleweight champion would continue his reign, he envisioned a knockout win for Canelo. “I think Canelo probably stops him, knocks him out,” Plant responded.

He was then asked about the ongoing verbal barbs between the Jalisco-based fighter and David Benavidez. Benavidez has repeatedly called out Canelo for a fight. However, Canelo has never been keen on it. Lately, he demanded a steep $150-200 million to get that fight rolling, which in all reality seemed unfeasible. Las Vegas-based Plant commented on this front, “I mean I don’t think much of it. That’s for them to figure out.”

However, he used the opportunity to outline his yearning to fight bigger fights with top opponents in the coming days. He remarked, “I’m only interested in big fights ahead of me.” The response raises another important question. When and against whom will Caleb Plant fight next?

Is Caleb Plant vs. Jermall Charlo next?

In November last year, 31-year-old Plant had claimed that his potential fight against Jermall Charlo was almost finalized. Speaking to DAZN, he noted, “I feel I’m so locked in on that and that’s what I want. If that means taking a tune-up fight in the meantime to stay busy then so be it.” However, neither did he take a tune-up fight, nor did he face off against the older Charlo brother.

But, recently, rumors emerged suggesting that the two would fight on July 13th. However, the conjecture too has now been debunked. Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards, trainer, author, and head coach for former IBF world champion Caleb Plant gave a clear update on this front. In his recent Mailbag for the promotions company, he quipped, “Caleb Plant is not scheduled to fight Jermall Charlo on July 13th. I’m not sure who said that but if you didn’t hear it from either fighter don’t believe it. It’s a great match up but as of yet, the fight is not done.”
