In November 2021, Canelo Alvarez became the undisputed super middleweight champion when he unified all four belts after defeating Caleb Plant by an 11th-round TKO. It was an impressive fight where Plant showcased his full arsenal and kept Alvarez at bay for the most part. But as the fight progressed, Canelo started dominating, resulting in two consecutive knockouts in the 11th round, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
Since then, Sweethands has been rebuilding himself slowly and steadily and has won three consecutive matches, including a 9th-round TKO victory against Trevor McCumby in September, thus becoming the WBA interim super middleweight champion. After that victory, Plant has put himself in a strong position to challenge Canelo once again. While that rematch against Canelo is still far away, Plant sat down with former Super middleweight champion Andre Ward on his All The Smoke podcast and revealed his biggest regret during his fight against Alvarez.
Caleb Plant would rather overdo it

In a lengthy sit-down interview with undefeated veteran Andre Ward, Plant first revealed how he got the offer to fight Canelo way back in 2019 on a five-week notice, which he felt wasn’t enough time to face someone like Canelo. But due to the lack of adequate preparation time, he rejected the fight and in the end, Callum Smith faced the 62-2-2 boxer. But once he got the fight again in 2021, he was ready for it. “It’s going to happen in September,” said Plant, stating how he was completely ready this time around.
But once again, his plans were ruined when the fight got delayed from September to November. He recalled, “It went up, being pushed back to November. Locked in, you know, that’s a Super Bowl, fighting for undisputed. It’s time to lock in. I feel like I probably trained too long for that fight and then I got pushed back to November.” According to Caleb Plant, his calendar got completely ruined as the fight got postponed, resulting in him over-training for the fight.
Caleb Plant then added that it is his process to immerse himself in the training completely and how it can even be threatening to his condition “You know and knowing how I am, you know how I am training year round keeping my way you know may have been a little OD,” stated Plant regretfully. He further added, “I’d rather have a regret if that is one like that than feeling like I didn’t work hard enough,” implying that he would rather over-train before a fight than go into it unprepared and face the consequences.
Canelo vs Plant was a wild affair. It was an intense rivalry where the duo even got into a scuffle during the face-off in Las Vegas when Plant took a swing at Canelo Alvarez. During the interview, the 23-2 boxer also revealed the conversation he had with Canelo that led to that heated segment.

A matter of pride
On being asked the reason behind the scuffle, Plant replied that he does not remember the whole thing now. But it started when one of those two said something and the other one replied with the same intensity. That is when Canelo shoved Plant, “He pushed me. He shoved me real hard and you know if you just standing there somebody tried to shove you off your feet you know that wasn’t part of the program,” implying that everything that happened after that verbal confrontation was in the heat of the moment.
Plant was not gonna take this disrespect idly and according to him, he did what anyone would do, be it a fighter or a non-fighter. “I did what I feel like most men would do,” stated Plant, as it was a matter of pride for him. While Plant lost that fight, he was proud of all the work and sacrifice he put in to face Canelo Alvarez.
