The name has stuck,” revealed a young Figueroa. However, the WBC interim featherweight champion is not in this sport to look pretty. He has quite a rugged fighting style, which allows him to grind it out against anyone, and even he knows that.

A few years ago, Brandon Figueroa told Boxing Junkie that he is aware that “he don’t fight pretty.” But he is “not in this to look pretty. I’m in this to fight.” A mentality that has been embedded in him by his family roots which includes a big brother and former world lightweight champion, Omar Figueroa.

Brandon Figueroa’s boxing family

Figueroa comes from a boxing family hailing from Weslaco, Texas. His father Omar Figueroa Sr., has been his trainer and played a crucial role in shaping his career. According to the 28-year-old, his attacking style comes from his father who has always told him that, “pressure breaks pipes.” He looked up to Mexican fighters like Salvador Sanchez and Julio Cesar Chavez and took inspiration from them while training his son.

Brandon Figueroa’s elder brother Omar Figueroa Jr., is a former WBC lightweight world champion, also known for his all-action style. The brother duo has created their own unique fighting style relying on “stamina, speed, power in both hands, toughness and we can both switch, lefty or righty. It’s a mix of everything thrown at you at the same time. A lot of fighters aren’t used to guys that can apply pressure, can box a little bit and throw from all angles.” Even Heartbreaker’s sister Omayra Figueroa also helps in supporting the family’s boxing journey. She will surely support his brother on February 1, when he will take on Fulton for the second time.
