The news of Showtime Boxing’s shutdown has taken the boxing fraternity by storm. Showtime Sports focused on combat sports and documentaries. It’s now exiting the sports business like HBO Sports did in 2018. Furthermore, CBS Sports, part of Paramount, will manage all future sports content. The company is looking to sell its MMA promotion, Bellator too. However, the decision to shut down doesn’t affect the remaining events of the year.
Showtime will finish its two scheduled boxing events this year. Moreover, Showtime Sports’ president, Stephen Espinoza, is deeply disappointed by the decision. Furthermore, renowned names from boxing are questioning the very landscape of boxing. The news has sparked massive speculation among fans, including boxers such as Terence Crawford, Jamel Herring, and more. Joining the list is renowned promoter of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn. According to Eddie, boxing’s future doesn’t appear very bright.

In an interview posted by ES News, Eddie Hearn said boxing suffered without HBO and will suffer without Showtime. He praised Stephen Espinoza for extending boxing’s life on Showtime. Hearn said, “Boxing will be worse off without Showtime, just like it was without HBO. Stephen Espinoza did a great job fighting for boxing and extending its life on Showtime.”
Furthermore, the Matchroom Boxing Promoter mentioned that PBC needs a TV deal to survive, despite having a good brand value and reputable fighters. DAZN might host them, but Amazon is also a possibility. As he opined, “Regarding PBC, they need a broadcaster to survive. They have a good brand and fighters, but they need a TV deal. DAZN could be a potential platform for them, but they might also be talking to Amazon.”
Ryan Garcia and Terence Crawford express concern over the shutdown of Showtime Boxing
Ryan Garcia and Terence Crawford commented on Showtime Boxing’s shutdown. They both believe the sport needs unity.
Garcia posted on his X account. He expressed disappointment about the news, stating that Showtime and HBO helped boxing grow. Furthermore, he called for boxers to unite.
Furthermore, Crawford noticed Garcia’s tweet. He agreed with the lightweight champion. According to ‘Bud,’ boxers indeed need to unite. Bud also believes that they can set aside in-ring rivalries. Subsequently, this unity will help them outside the ring to support their families and the sport.
I couldnt agree more @RyanGarcia. The system we have isn’t going to fix this. We gotta think different. Look at every other sport is building empires by doing it right. Us fighters need to come together. We can fight in the ring but work together for our sport and our families. https://t.co/rJOTFNIxkJ
