Can a fight card with Benavidez, Davis, and Charlo redefine the future of boxing?

Time is close to determining who reigns supreme in the featherweight division. Is it the Interim WBC champion Brandon Figueroa, who is climbing up the food chain of the 126-pound division? Or is it Rey Vargas, who wants to tighten his grip on the WBC strap? A mouthwatering clash could be in the making, and that’s only one of four fights of a stacked card.

The WBC recently enforced Figueroa’s mandatory status against Vargas, and it wasn’t long before the two would put pen to paper. While there is no confirmation or official reports yet, the challenger has also hinted at the deal. Figueroa, 27, turned to his Instagram handle and shared a collage of four fighters, including himself.

The other three fights alongside him were Gervonta Davis, Jermell Charlo, and David Benavidez. What’s more? The caption read, “December,” with a shushing face emoji, suggesting all of them sharing a December card. Interestingly, ‘Tank’ is long rumored to make a return to the boxing ring later this year. But Charlo, 34, hasn’t fought in almost a year since dropping the fight to Canelo Alvarez. Whereas, Benavidez, 27, is the current WBC interim light heavyweight champion and might wait till the conclusion of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol to decide on his next fight.

For Figueroa, the coming fight with Vargas is another leap to the champion’s territory, as he found a new leash at 126 after losing a close but controversial decision to Stephen Fulton in 2021. In addition, ‘The Heartbreaker’ poses a significant threat to Vargas’ throne, as the latter is coming off one split draw and a loss in his last two fights. While the two will contest for the WBC gold, there is another champion at 126, who wants to unify and eye the WBC gold.

Nick Ball is ready to take the WBC strap away from Brandon Figueroa and Rey Vargas

Ball, 27, recently clinched the WBA title when he handed a defeat to Raymond Ford at Matchroom vs. Queensberry 5 vs. 5. After the British boxer wrapped the WBA belt around his waist, he didn’t waste time to lay the next claim on the WBC one. Speaking of his draw with Vargas, which he believed he won, he said, “I am coming for my belt. Everyone knows it’s my belt, the green and gold.”

However, he might have to wait till Vargas and Figueroa fight it out for the WBC championship, and if Figueroa’s social media post is any indication, he might not have to wait for long. It remains to be seen how this struggle for the WBC featherweight crown pans out.
