Subriel Matias might be getting a homecoming bout for his next title defence against Liam Paro. In fresh updates for the super light division, details have emerged of his potential second title defence.

In late November, last year, the 31-year-old fighter successfully defended his IBF belt against the challenge of his Uzbeki opponent, Shohjahon Ergashev, giving the latter his career’s first defeat. The highly watched Las Vegas fight put Matias on the map as he positioned himself as a noteworthy contender in the lighter-weight divisions. Months later, in a speeding of events, he remains deeply fixated in talks with Aussie, Paro, a fight that could be under the helms of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. How come? Let’s find out.

Subriel Matias who hails from the Puerto Rican city of Fajardo has for a while now, undertaken his stints in the ring within the boundaries of the US. From 2018, three years since his maiden pro-fight that took place in his home country, to date, the fighter has not gone back to Puerto Rico for any professional undertaking. However, per Michael Benson’s reports, that first flourished through Puerto Rican publication, El Nuevo Dia, ‘El Orgullo de Maternillo’ is in advanced talks for his voluntary title defence against Liam Paro in a selected Puerto Rican location for the early summers.

Boxing Scene has also reported that the 27-year-old Paro has signed unconditionally for this fight, which could be the biggest of his 24-unbeaten career. The southpaw who also holds the WBO Global Super Light belt last fought in a San Francisco fight against Ohio-based, Montana Love, winning the bout in the 6th round via a knockout.

However, to get the Subriel Matias vs. Liam Paro rolling, a pertinent impediment lingers.

Will Matchroom Boxing get the promotions gig?

It is to see if Matias’ team, headed by his manager and local promoter, Juan Orengo’s Fresh Productions is game enough to sign a promotional contract with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, the name that remains behind Paro.

The 100% knockout ratio boxer, Matias’ unanimous decision loss to Russian-fighter, Petros Ananyan in 2020 marked his career’s first loss, and his first, among the six consecutive fights he had signed up for under Professional Boxing Champions (PBC). Last year, his name flashed on the free-agent market, and he even considered riding the wave with Matchroom Boxing. However, PBC later convinced him to remain with them for yet another fight. The entanglement resulted in him being away from the ring for a solid nine months, with his comeback headlining against Ergashev last year.
