Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao last fought a professional boxing bout in 2021, in which he lost against Yordenis Ugas. However, the 45-year-old fighter feels that he still has the fire inside him to come back to the squared circle again. As this news has caused a stir in the boxing community, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has asserted that he would approve Pacquiao’s return to the ring. That too for a title fight.
Terence Crawford was the undisputed welterweight champion. However, since ‘Bud’ moved up to the super-welterweight division, the No. 1 contender Mario Barrios was elevated from interim champion to full WBC welterweight champion by the World Boxing Council and its Board of Governors on the 18th of June. Given that Mario Barrios is now the welterweight champion, Manny Pacquiao may get a chance to fight for the title of the WBC welterweight champion. And fortunately for the boxer, the council has now accepted the 45-year-old’s wish.

Frenchman Souleymane Cissokho is the mandatory challenger to face Barrios inside the ring. Despite that, the WBC has revealed that they would allow Pacquiao as a wild card entrant to fight Barrios for the title. Michael Benson shared a tweet on X about the situation which read, “WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed that they would approve Manny Pacquiao fighting Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight world title at age 45: “I do like the idea very much. I think Pacquiao can beat any fighter or be competitive with any fighter today.”
