It appears that ‘Canelo’ Alvarez‘s longing to avenge the loss to Dmitry Bivol will fritter away to the back burner. On the face of it, it seems that he might as well prepare himself for the ‘Arabian Nights.’ Fans may see the undisputed Super Middleweight champion leapfrogging over the Light Heavyweight to the Cruiserweight division. There Badou Jack awaits him. However, the Gambian-Swedish boxer’s title defense from the Mexican challenge remains on the drawing board.
Boxing King Media reached out to Amer Abdallah, Skill Challenge Promotions‘ Director of Boxing Operations, to get his views on a couple of burnings issues. The reporter started with the hot topic of Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk signing up with the promotions. Then he checked on the anxiety-provoking incident of Jack sharing the Usyk information with everyone.

Amer mentioned his conversation with Badou Jack and Eddie Hearn. The Englishman incidentally seemed keen on a fight between Jack and Canelo Alvarez. He had even checked with Abdallah for any updates on the development related to the match. The latter replied that he was in touch with Canelito’s team sorting out any hurdles. Additionally, he spoke with the champion directly.
So barring a few terms and conditions, they seem to be on the same page as far as the agreement is concerned. However, one thing holding them back is the matter related to weight. He said, “…he wants to jump up to cruiser weight and you know, I think the only thing that’s sticking right now is where that weight is because the financial terms are agreed upon, the date is agreed upon, um, everything is there.”
Explaining the weight challenges, he mentioned that if a fighter wants to make it over to Cruiserweight, he has to fight a Cruiserweight. To expect a Cruiserweight to scale down to a Super Middleweight would be outlandish. Abdallah mentioned they are checking with governing bodies on how existing rules pan out. Hence, with all said and done, he expressed full faith in Alvarez’s team.
He said, “… there [are] options for both guys, so maybe the fight gets made, maybe the fight doesn’t get made. I would like to; I will, [of course], love for that fight to be made for everybody’s interest, and you know, we have 90% of the terms agreed to. It’s just the remaining, uh, you know, one or two items, and I think the weight is going to be the [the] issue here…”

The Mexican champion’s inaugural venture
Remembering a fact should do them well before the news jolts fans out of their slumber. It would not be ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s first try into the Cruiserweight. In 2021, after becoming the undisputed Super Middleweight champion, he called for a bout with then-reigning Cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. However, the attempt failed when Makabu received marching orders to defend his title from Thabiso Mchunu. That’s when Alvarez, now on Matchroom’s rolls, took up the Light Heavyweight challenge.
