For nearly a year, boxing fans have been tirelessly waiting for the highly anticipated title fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora. In fact, boxing insider Rick Glaser even said, “It’ll be almost a miracle status if this fight ever happens.” Fans felt frustrated as rumors swirled and dates came and went. Reports from ESPN in May 2023 suggested that Spence and Fundora might fight in October last year in Dallas, as the Truth challenged him for the WBC and WBO super welterweight titles. However, months passed, and the fight never happened.

But now, it seems a miracle has happened. After countless delays and speculation, the long-awaited Spence vs. Fundora fight might finally be happening. The announcement came through just hours ago, confirming that these two giants of the sport may meet in the ring. Fans would be already buzzing with excitement about the prospect of this fight finally coming to fruition. But there’s even more news that could make this event an unforgettable one.

Errol Spence Jr. to headline Las Vegas once again

According to boxing commentator Danny on X, the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Sebastian Fundora showdown is being set for March 29th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, marking the first time these two fighters will face off in a highly anticipated championship bout. However, it’s important to note that the deal is not yet fully confirmed, as the disclaimer on the post read, ERROL SPENCE VS SEBASTIAN FUNDORA IS PLANNED FOR MARCH 29 AT THE MGM GRAND IN LAS VEGAS (DEAL IS NOT DONE YET, BUT THAT IS THE PLAN AS OF NOW).”

The talks were first confirmed by former ESPN senior boxing writer Dan Rafael. “Per source involved, the target date for #FundoraSpence 154 title bout is March 29 to headline a PBC on Prime PPV at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Deal not 100% done yet but if it gets done that is the plan as of now, the source said,” read his post on X.

Errol Spence Jr. has been out of the ring since his TKO loss to Terence Crawford in July 2023 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. That loss left the Texas resident with a shattered reputation and a period of uncertainty about his possible return.

On the other hand, Sebastian Fundora, who won the WBC and WBO super welterweight titles by defeating Tim Tszyu in March 2024, has been waiting for his first title defense ever since. Even though his victory over Tszyu was seen as an upset, as the Soul Taker was struck by an accidental elbow from the Towering Inferno, which cut his forehead, left him bloodied, and hampered his vision, the 21-1 boxer is still in the limelight. But the news doesn’t stop there.

What’s your perspective on:

Will Spence finally silence retirement rumors with a win, or is Fundora the new king?

In another exciting twist, boxing commentator Fernando Sabatini confirmed earlier today that Edwin De Los Santos and Frank Martin are also in talks to fight as part of the undercard event on the same day. His post read, I AM CONFIRMED that Edwin De Los Santos and Frank Martin are in negotiations for a possible fight on March 29 at the MGM in Las Vegas as part of the event #FundoraSpence. It could be at 135 or 140lbs. #DelosSantosMartin @SebastianFundo1 @ErrolSpenceJr.” Since Errol Spence Jr. is Frank Martin’s promoter as well, there is a very real chance that this update might be true.

De Los Santos and Martin are both rising stars in the lightweight division. ‘The Ghost’ has not stepped into the ring since his loss to Gervonta Davis in June last year at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. That defeat left many fans wondering when he would return to reclaim his position among the other elites in the lightweight division. Similarly, the Dominican Republic boxer has also been on a hiatus since losing the fight to Shakur Stevenson on November 2023 in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Both fighters, once at the top of their game, have been absent from the ring, leaving boxing enthusiasts eagerly awaiting their next moves.

Whether this undercard becomes official or not, it has already added an extra level of excitement surrounding the event, making March 29th a must-watch date for boxing fans.

What’s at stake?

Despite the optimism surrounding the fight date, both Spence and Fundora have yet to officially confirm the bout. The uncertainty surrounding the fight’s finalization leaves many wondering if this will actually happen. Adding to the confusion, Spence has been the subject of numerous retirement rumors.

In early 2025, a fake account impersonating Michael Benson posted that Spence had retired, only for the former champion to dismiss the rumors on his Instagram. The post read, “The former unified champ Errol Spence Jr. has sadly announced his retirement at the age of 34 years old after sustaining another injury to his eye in training. We wish Errol all the best.” However, Spence quickly clarified that anything not coming directly from him was “trash” and urged his fans not to believe everything they read online.

However, the question remains: If Errol Spence Jr. were to retire, who would Fundora defend his titles against? Given the uncertainty surrounding Spence’s future, there’s a growing concern that this fight might never happen—or that it might happen too late. Should Spence retire, fans are left to wonder who could step up to challenge Fundora for his newly earned titles.

What do you think about the fight update? Do you really think the Truth will retire soon? And, most importantly, could the undercard featuring De Los Santos and Martin be the cherry on top for fans in Las Vegas?? Do share your thoughts below!
