David Benavidez is ready to sway the fans once again before this year comes to an end. He wants to put on a show and defend his interim light heavyweight title despite not needing to do so. Nevertheless, the American fighter has the itch to walk inside the boxing ring and dismantle the opposition. But who is he fighting against? The rumors had David Morrell‘s name for a while but those are not true.
Notably, Benavidez, 27, is set to defend his interim title against Jesse Hart on a December card instead of fighting it out with another slugger in Morrell. In addition, both fighters’ camps have categorically shunned the rumors of Benavidez vs. Morrell. Therefore, whenever these speculations again pop up, it irks Jake Donovan. The Ring reporter turned to his X handle and expressed his frustration over the situation.
Taking a jibe at the situation, he wrote, “Not sure why Benavidez-Morrell rumors keep popping up when literally everyone involved has repeatedly dismissed any possiblity of that fight happening next for Benavidez. Please keep your trash 🗑️off my timeline.”

Interestingly, Benavidez, at 29-0, is next in line to meet the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol for all the straps at 175. Morrell, at 11-0, is the current WBA (regular) champion and chances of him facing the undisputed champion down the lines are also pretty high. However, if ‘Mexican Monster’ wins all the marbles, then he has a unique plan to push for a fight against Canelo Alvarez.

Benavidez believes the only way a fight with the Mexican champion can materialize is if he lays claim to all the belts at 175. In a conversation with Mr. Organik, the Pheonix native pitched the idea of the winner taking it all. How is it possible? Benavidez explained it with a fight at a catchweight.

He declared, “If I win all four belts, it would be a great fight [against Canelo]. Maybe we could do a catchweight. He could do the 168-lb belts, and I could put the 175-lb belts. So, we could fight together, and the winner takes all.”

Boxing fans have demanded a fight between Benavidez and Alvarez for a long time now. But the super middleweight champion had been reluctant to indulge the whims of the boxing community because of weight concerns or inadequate pay. Not to mention the risks involved in losing his titles. But it’s a fight that fans will happily pay to watch still.
