WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis defends his titles against Lamont Roach Jr. tonight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Although the fight hasn’t concluded yet, reports suggest the Baltimore native is planning for the future, and these plans don’t involve WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
Last year, the Baltimore native shocked the boxing world by announcing his unexpected retirement. This left fans wondering if he would ever share the ring with Shakur Stevenson or Vasyl Lomachenko before retiring. A clash with Stevenson had been long anticipated, with both fans and Stevenson himself pushing for the fight. However, the 30-year-old has shown little interest in making it happen. Meanwhile, there were discussions about a potential bout with the IBF champion Vasyl Lomachenko, but with Lomachenko reportedly planning his retirement, that matchup seems off the table. Recently, the newly crowned WBO lightweight champion, Keyshawn Davis, has also entered the conversation.
However, if there’s any truth to Davis’ purported plans, Lomachenko could still be his next opponent. According to a report from Boxing Kingdom, “Gervonta Davis was close to an agreement earlier this year to fight Vasiliy Lomachenko. This fight could still be made to happen next, provided Lomachenko resumes his career. Gervonta has many options.”

This, of course, means Stevenson will have to wait even longer for a potential showdown with Gervonta Davis. However, it’s important to note that Davis himself has yet to confirm these reports. Following his fight against Roach Jr., all eyes will be on Davis as he reveals his next move.
Regardless, the question is, who would win if and when Davis and Stevenson meet in the ring?

Pundit Adam Catterall echoed similar thoughts, comparing Stevenson’s performance to elite finishers like Terence Crawford. “Someone like a Terence Crawford would have taken Josh Padley out, he’s a savage.” Despite the doubts, Stevenson remains confident, claiming, “I’m better than him at hit and don’t get hit.” He has called for negotiations, believing the fight would be “the two best fighters in boxing.”
That being said, regardless of whether Shakur Stevenson can or can not beat Gervonta Davis, Stevenson will have to keep waiting for his shot at Davis. Do you think the fight will ever happen?
