In recent years, the sport of boxing has been tainted by accusations of PED use. While several boxers have faced suspensions or have been caught in doping scandals, there are a few notable exceptions. Devin Haney, the former undisputed lightweight champion has recently made headlines for his decision to fully commit himself to year-round drug testing through the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting athletes from the dangers of PEDs.
VADA’s recent X announcement sends a strong message not only to the boxing world but also to other athletes across all sports. Yet, this announcement has sparked both praise and skepticism from fans.

A New Era of Integrity?
On January 3, 2025, VADA shared an important update. “@Vada_Testing welcomes @Realdevinhaney to our 24/7/365 program that will extend to January 2, 2026,” the post read. This means the Dream will now be subjected to random, year-round drug testing until 2026. This testing program aims to uphold the highest standards of integrity and fairness in the sport of boxing, providing transparency and accountability for athletes and their fans.
Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO Laboratories and also a long-time advocate for anti-doping measures in sports, responded positively to VADA’s announcement. In a comment, he stated, “Devin Haney is the only pro boxer in the world doing 24/7/365 drug testing. Hopefully more boxers will be willing to do year-round testing and provide leadership for the clean boxing movement.” Conte’s statement is important because it frames Haney as a leader within the boxing community, taking an active role in creating a cleaner environment for the sport.

While Haney’s commitment is laudable, some may see it as unnecessary or burdensome. The reactions to the CEO of SNAC Nutrition’s endorsement revealed differing opinions. Some fans have raised concerns over the potential negative effects of constant testing, particularly the risks of “draining blood.” This reaction reflects a misunderstanding of the testing process. Blood testing in anti-doping programs is not the same as the type of blood draws that can cause harm or weakness; rather, it is a routine procedure to identify banned substances in an athlete’s system.
Another similar comment read, “Man I don’t advise no boxer to do a test with THE BIGGEST PATRON OF STEROIDS 🤦♂️ you def delusional especially when are so many companies doing the same tests as VADA. You not real talking about “clean” fighters with your resume ?? Devin a 🤡 he will never be a star. Keep him.” This type of skepticism is not uncommon, especially when an individual or company has a controversial past. Conte’s history with BALCO, a laboratory implicated in one of the biggest doping scandals in sports, only adds fuel to the fire.

Is Devin Haney the hero boxing needs, or is year-round testing just a publicity stunt?

Finally, some dismissed the importance of VADA testing altogether. One fan jokingly remarked that “nobody gives asf about VADA testing.” While this cynicism is understandable given the history of the sport, it also points to a larger problem in the fight for a clean sport—many fans are simply fatigued by the ongoing debate and unsure of its value. But if you think that’s all, you’re wrong. Because there’s more to the story.
The former WBC super lightweight champion last fought against Ryan Garcia in April last year at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Haney lost after being knocked down three times. However, the Victorville native’s victory was soon overturned after he tested positive for Ostarine, leading to a one-year suspension, and a change in the official result to a no-contest. Despite the controversy, Haney filed a lawsuit against ‘King Ry’, citing breach of contract and fraud. With Garcia’s suspension ending in April 2025, many expected a rematch between the two but here comes a twist in the story.

The 31-0 with 15 KO boxer recently announced that he will return in March instead. Earlier today, the 26-year-old hopped on the Instagram story to reveal that he is returning to the ring in March. “March… I’m back,” he wrote.

While fans are eager to know who is he fighting next, some believe he might fight the current WBC interim champion Alberto Puello, as Haney previously turned down a fight with Sandor Martin—his WBC super lightweight mandatory—due to dissatisfaction with the low purse bid. While there is a buzz about his return, the identity of his opponent remains unclear, leaving fans speculating. Regardless of the opponent, Devin Haney’s comeback will be a crucial test of his skills and standing in the division.
As Haney prepares for his return to the ring in March 2025, his next fight could reshape his legacy. So, what do you think about Devin Haney’s role in being a positive figure for drug testing in boxing? Do let us know in the comments below!
