It’s not been an easy few months for Sunny Edwards. He not only lost a very important fight in his career last year, but he also incurred an injury that proved to be lethal. Now, with time, he’s licked his wounds, and scabs seemed to have fallen. Picking himself up from such a misfortune, the boxer is already making plans for his next move in boxing. The aim? To be a world champion again.

Mid-December last year, the Londoner fought hard against his Texan opponent, Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. While Edwards tried hard to sustain against ‘Bam’, the latter powered through, giving his opponent a retirement loss in the 9th round. ‘Showtime’ Edwards was hailed for the fight he put up, despite his scathing loss. Now, in a further demonstration of such resilience, his promoter, Eddie Hearn, reveals how the fighter is ambitious enough to want to go up against Sivenathi Nontshinga next.

Just a couple of days ago, South African Sivenathi Nontshinga defeated his Mexican opponent, Adrian Curiel, in a do-over matchup via a tenth-round technical knockout. It was the 25-year-old ‘Special one’s chance to redeem himself after Curiel defeated him in November last year in a second-round knockout in a Monte Carlo fight. The fight was crucial for the light-flyweight champion. Now that Sivenathi Nontshinga has claimed his IBF title back, another challenger has appeared on the horizon.

British promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed an interest in getting a fight between Nontshinga and Edwards rolling after witnessing his recent bout. However, for that to happen, Edwards will have to drop down a division. To Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel, the British promoter noted, “If Sunny Edwards can make light flyweight, a chance to become a two-weight world champion, Sunny vs. Nontshinga is a big fight. It’s a very good fight as well. Nontshinga has proved himself time and time again.”

If Edwards gets his fight against the 13-1, Nontshinga, it would be his chance at a world title in a second weight class. In April 2021, after defeating Moruti Mthalane at York Hall on points, Edwards began his reign as the IBF flyweight champion. After defending the belt four times, his claim on it fell through after his loss against Bam.

Hearn’s push to get Sunny Edwards a fight against the South African fame directly aligns with the blueprint the former had suggested in the wake of his career’s first loss.

Despite losing that winter night, Edwards was a recipient of much praise. That praise spoke to him. In the wake of it, as per Boxing Scene, the fighter drew a brief plan as to where he would take his next fight, and what it would mean to his career.

The 20-1 fighter explained, “I’ve now become the big nights of boxing and I’ll do everything I can do be there again and again and again. Spoke to Eddie and Frank Smith. They’re on the same page as me. They think my stock has risen. They think more people want to see me fight than ever and ever before. Also, they know I’m a very easy person to make a fight with.” Now all that remains is to hear from Nontshinga, and a fight will be set.
