Boxing News: Shakur Stevenson and Edwin De Los Santos Agree to a Tentative Rematch

Shakur Stevenson and Edwin De Los Santos met for the first time on November 16 last year. The two lightweights squared up to settle the argument for the vacant WBC title. The previous incumbent, Devin Haney, had relinquished it to move up a division. Fans had reportedly pinned a lot of hope on the Stevenson-Santos fight.

However, to their utter dismay, the match barely met their expectations. With both boxers throwing minimal punches in a twelve-round bout, the fight established a new record in CompuBox. Stevenson won by a unanimous decision. As it appears, both fighters would probably be happy to give each other another chance at redemption. For the American boxer, a rematch would be an opportunity to do what he couldn’t in the previous edition—score an emphatic victory. For the Dominican southpaw, a golden chance to turn the tables.

Shakur Stevenson and Edwin De Lo Santos: Reconciliation and Return

Early this morning, a personal exchange between Shakur Stevenson and Edwin De Los Santos surfaced. Admiring the two boxers for displaying maturity and sorting out the difference, whatever there might have been, @MoBoxingNP said, “Respect Shakur Stevenson and Edwin La Granada.” A screenshot of the discussion between Stevenson and Los Santos accompanied.

It’s not present in its entirety. However, the lighthearted conversation showcased Edwin De Los Santos telling Shakur Stevenson to acknowledge the pressure he felt during the fight. “But admit it, you felt the pressure,” said the Dominican boxer. But the Newark-born Olympic silver medalist disagreed, though later he accepted that Los Santos was a way too good fighter. He said, “No, I didn’t feel pressure u was backing up a lot after round 7, champ, but I admit you are a great fighter.”

The Santo Domingo-born Los Santos reciprocated and admired Shakur Stevenson for his skills, especially counterpunching. He said, “Yes, bro, you are very good at counterattacking; I couldn’t allow it to do it with me. But I know, and everyone knows, that you are one of the best.” Then he expressed a desire if they could once again be in the ring to ensure the audience finally got their money’s worth: “I hope one day to fight again and do better, and recover the fans. Bro, my respect for you.”

The three-division world champion likewise wished him world championship glory and echoed similar sentiments in a second face-off. Stevenson said, “Respect to u too champ! Keep working; you’re gone be world champion some day, and honestly, I wud love to run it back wit u.”

Post-November 16 fight, a back-and-forth sort commenced between the two camps. Fans may not have forgotten an unhappy Edwin De Los Santos quipping during the post-fight in-ring interview: “You know what? I came to fight; he came for a track meet, and I wouldn’t say that I’m on his level; I say I’m above his level because I came to fight tonight. I came to put on a fight, and Shakur Stevenson decided not to fight. He was gifted a title, but I am the champion of the people.”

Thankfully, now that they are exhibiting maturity, both boxers have seemingly decided to let bygones be bygones and move on. Fans definitely deserve to see a rematch between outstanding fighters.
