After all this time, the fight that every boxing fan in the world wants to see happen is still far from happening. On the last day of 2024, several reports of a possible fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford took over the internet. While there is no concrete information regarding the fight, the news spread like wildfire with many notable media pages dedicated to boxing also claiming the same.
A few hours later, ES News uploaded a video on their YouTube channel talking about the rumors and their origin. Boxing insider and founder of ES News Elie Seckbach also talked about the possible date of the match and how it could be the biggest fight Las Vegas has ever seen.

Seckbach acknowledged that the news regarding the possible clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford “is everywhere.” However, he couldn’t “find the source.” He added, “I can’t find anyone who started this rumor. And I went to a lot of legitimate news outlets but no one has mentioned it.” According to the insider, because of no concrete source, this is still just a rumor that has caught fire on a massive scale.
However, he did not deny the possibility of the matchup claiming that it still can happen. Seckbach further claimed that the rumored payday pool of $250 million might have changed Canelo Alvarez’s mind regarding facing Terence Crawford.
The 62-2-2 boxer has always refuted the news about him facing ‘Bud’ because of the difference in their respective weight divisions. However, many reports have claimed that the Omaha native is on Canelo’s shortlist for a Cinco De Mayo fight. Which would put this match sometime around May.
The reports have further claimed that His Excellency Turki Alalshikh wants this fight to happen and will take the fight to Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena which has been Canelo’s hunting ground for a very long time now.
The rumors were further fueled by the unified super middleweight champion’s latest statement regarding facing Terence Crawford. The Guadalajara native has always downright refused to face ‘Bud’ for more than one reason. However, in a conversation on Sway’s Universe a few months ago, Canelo Alvarez almost hinted at a changed opinion and showed some excitement for the fight.

The 34-year-old declared, “I’m in. Why not? Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great fighter, but for me, in my weight class, it’s an easy fight. Easy money,” claiming that he won’t shy away from facing Terence Crawford for the right amount of money.
Canelo further revealed his reason for rejecting ‘Bud’ all those times and what has changed now. “If the money is right, I’m in because I don’t like to fight guys like Crawford; he moves a lot, and the fight is not that great. I saw in his last fight, and he doesn’t move that much now. So, if the money is right, I’m in right now,” stating how Crawford’s elusive fighting style has influenced his decision.
In 2024, Crawford transitioned from 147 lbs to 154 lbs (light middleweight) to pursue titles in a fourth weight class. He faced Israel Madrimov for the WBA super welterweight title in Los Angeles and won via a unanimous decision. However, it was far from his best performance and the struggle to adapt to this new heavier weight class was quite visible.

Who knew that this underwhelming performance would change Canelo’s mind and give ‘Bud’ what he always wanted? However, the road is not that easy as the 41-0 boxer will have to still move up two weight classes again to get on level with Canelo unless the pair decides to meet at catchweight.
However, even though there is no credible source regarding the news, this is the most traction this fight has gotten in quite a long time. Furthermore, Alvarez’s changed attitude has also given fans a little bit more hope. Maybe this time, it is finally happening.
