Does Edgar Berlanga really stand a chance against the undefeated David Benavidez in the ring?

On February 1, 2025, David Benavidez will compete in the highest stake of his career against David Morrell. The WBC interim light heavyweight champion and the WBA regular champion will face each other for an opportunity to face the winner of Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev rematch.

Despite defeating Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade, Benavidez was still scrambling for that opportunity to fight against the super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez. Sadly, it never came, forcing the 27-year-old to move up to 175. And who actually got the opportunity? Edgar Berlanga. Though both are on good terms and often indulge in funny banter with one another, there is still some competition there.

This might be the reason why, during the press conference of his upcoming fight, the 29-0 boxer when asked about the Berlanga-Canelo fight, the Mexican Monster claimed that Berlanga did not deserve the fight against Canelo. And that no one at Super Middleweight actually wanted to fight him. ‘The Chosen One’, however, did not take the criticism lightly and called out the Phoenix native. However, the move backfired on him as fans came in support of David Benavidez.

Edgar Berlanga’s Bold Fight Claims

The 22-1 boxer took to his ‘X’ and posted a close-up picture of David Morell, Benavidez’s nest opponent, from their recent green screen face-off. Responding to Benavidez’s comments, Berlanga noted, “Listen man, @benevidez stop the cap that we ain’t want to fight you,” stating that he never denied a fight against David Benavidez.

He further warned the undefeated interim champion to not lose against the Cuban David Morrell while hurling an insult towards Morrell. “Bro and don’t lose to this n**** man look at that fucked up hairline 😂,” stated Berlanga.

The Puerto Rican then switched his attention to David Morrell and compared him with the famous Halloween slasher film character Micheal Myers. He wrote, “If you lose to Micheal Myers you done with boxing,” hilariously warning Benavidez of the outcome if he were to lose.

The insults were not taken lightheartedly by boxing fans as they hurled insults towards Berlanga, claiming that the Brooklyn native doesn’t stand a chance against David Benavidez.

David Benavidez: the clear winner

A user wrote, “You can’t beat Either one,” stating that Edgar Berlanga will never be able to beat either David Benavidez or David Morrell. Coincidentally, both Benavidez and Morrell boast an undefeated record and win against the biggest challengers in both divisions. Something that ‘The Chosen One’ does not have under his belt.

Another user wrote, “Before you criticize any boxer, you need to achieve something in boxing besides getting your a** whipped by Canelo. Fight another top challenger (Caleb Plant) and prove you belong in the conversation 💯,’ claiming that Berlanga’s rise to fame was solely the result of his loss against Canelo Alvarez. He has not yet proven himself against any tough challengers and top rankers at 168, something which Benavidez has done countless times.

Another user wrote, “Benavidez would finish you, you next bum.” Ironically, in 2021, ‘The Mexican Monster’ stated something similar when Edgar Berlanga achieved 16 first-round KO victories in his first 16 professional matches. According to Benavidez, “The people that he knocked out are all bums.” The 27-year-old has fought 7 bouts since then but has only achieved one KO victory and received his first loss earlier this year. Moreover, he still does not have that prominent victory that will propel him to the next stage.

Another user wrote, “Morrel would cook yo aaah,” stating that the WBA regular champion will have a one-sided victory. The Santa Clara native made his debut just 5 years ago but has impressed everyone with his skills. Predicting a winner between these two can be tough. However, with both boxers having the same height and different boxing styles, it will be a brilliant match-up.

Amidst the sea of criticism, one fan actually found Edgar Berlanga’s insults hilarious and wrote, “Lmfaoooooo ngl that was funny as hell.” He was not the only one as many fans found the reference to the Halloween franchise character Micheal Myers amusing.

While the fight between Edgar Berlanga and David Benavidez is still a fantasy at this moment, it can still happen. There is only one weight class difference between these two and both of them have enough reasons to face one another. However, it doesn’t look like Benavidez will accept Berlanga’s challenge unless the latter picks up some crucial high-profile victories.
