The wait seems never-ending. If you were waiting for Gervonta Davis to return to the ring in March 2025 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and defend his title against Lamont Roach Jr., we have some bad news for you. The fight got canceled! What’s interesting is that the fight was originally scheduled to happen on December 14, but without any explanation, was postponed to March 2025 (the locations were also changed from Houston to Brooklyn) and now, has been canceled.

Gervonta Davis took to Instagram to announce, “The fight is f–king canceled.” A screenshot of the post was shared on the ‘Everything Boxing’ Twitter page. While ‘Tank’ has declared the fight “canceled,” official confirmation from Premier Boxing Champions is still pending.

However, it doesn’t seem like Roach has any idea about what’s happening. Just minutes after Davis’s story, Roach posted a workout video clip on Instagram. We wonder what led to this lack of harmony with regard to the details of the fight.

Could Davis’s story be an outcome of the online criticism he has had to face ever since the fight was announced? After all, his fans expected a much bigger fight. It is his 11th year as a professional boxer and he is 30. Fighting Roach seemed like a step backward for the boxer who faced Ryan Garcia in 2023. They want to see ‘Tank’ fight the best and Roach just didn’t seem fitting.

Let us not forget that ‘The Reaper’ is a super featherweight who lacks a bit of power. He barely defeated one of Tank’s knockout victims, Hector Garcia. In their boxing match in 2023, Roach won against Garcia through a split decision.

Owing to a mismatch with Roach, Davis had been repeatedly getting called out by boxing fans. Now that he has announced the fight got canceled, social media users couldn’t be any happier. What did they say?

Fans went crazy over the cancellation of Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr.

The comments section of ‘Everything Boxing’ quickly became a battleground, with fans voicing their frustration over Gervonta Davis’ boxing career. Many dismissed any excitement about the upcoming fight, expressing a clear disinterest in seeing the WBA lightweight in the ring. One fan bluntly stated:

  • “Nobody wanted to see that bulls–t. I just want Tank to fight somebody good.

It really looks like Roch Jr. will have to wait longer for a big fight. Despite being a WBA champion, he had to get the promotion’s permission to move up to lightweight for the match against Davis.

  • “Great, no one was calling for it anyway.”

While many social media users were relieved to know that the fight might not take place, Oscar De La Hoya was quick to grab the opportunity and made a proposal to Gervonta Davis. He took to X and wrote, “@Gervontaa_ Give, anyway me a call if you need a fight, I have the perfect guy for you.”

On the other hand, Bill Haney (Devin Haney’s father) took a dig at Davis in November. He stated, “It will be a good fight. I give it 50-50. I think ‘Tank’ is avoiding real boxers. He’s avoiding them for a reason.” However, it is not just Bill Haney who believes this. Many boxing fans are starting to think along similar lines. For instance, one fan wrote:

  • “I think Gervonta has a debilitating fear of being beaten. Every time he doubts his abilities, he posts weird stuff like this and talks about retirement.

However, there were fans who were looking forward to the fight and Davis’s Instagram story was quite saddening for them.

  • “This guy just loves to delay and reschedule and make us boxing fans wait and wait once again, it’s so annoying.”

Gervonta Davis had also received a lot of criticism when he announced that he would retire from the sport after 2025. “After next year, I’m out of it,” he stated earlier this month. His reason? A lack of enthusiasm for boxing. In fact, he also suggested he wanted to stay out of the limelight after his exit.

However, he still has the entirety of 2025 left, and if the Lamont Roach Jr. fight really got canceled, he will have to look at other options. A fan even had a suggestion for the boxer:

  • Shakur has a fight, and it seems like Zepeda is next. Maybe Keyshawn if Tank waits until summer? Not much else out there.”

With Premier Boxing Champions remaining silent on the issue, all eyes are on how they will handle the situation. It remains unclear whether Gervonta Davis’ actions were a calculated move to hype his fight. But one thing is for sure: whatever happens, fans will be watching closely for the next update.
