Arum stated, “But people are paying good money to watch good athletic competition, and this was disgraceful.” Arum questioned the officials’ scoring, expressing disbelief at the close margin. “At most, I gave [Ortiz] two rounds, maybe three rounds,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of delivering quality competition for the spectators’ investment.
Comparing Ortiz’s approach to another recent fight, Arum said, “I just thought with Shakur, he didn’t engage very much. But he wasn’t running around the ring like a track star. And Shakur definitely won the fight. That was never an issue.” Expressing incredulity at Ortiz’s claim of victory, Arum concluded, “And then for the guy to think he won the fight, he wasn’t landing any punches, and Teofimo was landing occasional punches. What the hell was he thinking? You don’t do a fight like that.”
Arum criticized the extended duration of Ortiz’s evasive tactics, emphasizing that such a strategy might be acceptable for a few rounds but not for the entire 12-round bout. In the meantime, Lopez is still looking for a Crawford bout.
