Shakur Stevenson is now all set to challenge the 130 lbs champion, Jamel Herring, for a title shot. This is a dream matchup for most extreme boxing purists and fans; Stevenson and Herring are currently two of the best super-featherweight contenders in the world. This fight definitely has the potential to be ranked as the biggest fight of the year.
At the outset, one would think that this would turn out to be a technical fight. However, Top Rank boss Bob Arum thinks otherwise and recently even shared his thoughts on this matchup. The 89-year-old believes this fight would be action-packed and that it would test the skills as well as the strength of both athletes.

“I have no idea but it’s going to be a real battle. I know Jamel, the way he can win the fight is he’s going to pressure Stevenson and it’s going to be a battle.

“It will not be a chess game, I predict that, it won’t be the chess game with two guys boxing and occasionally throwing a punch. There will be a serious, serious testing of each guy’s balls,” said Bob Arum.

Apart from just being in-ring rivals, Shakur Stevenson and Jamel Herring have also been long-time friends. However, the 24-year-old has never been hesitant to put the friendship aside for a shot at the 130 lbs WBA throne. Now that he finally has his chance, Stevenson will look to become the new king of the division on October 23.
Despite being friends, Shakur Stevenson has not shied away from taking shots at Herring and has even highlighted that he’s nothing more than a friend of his family.
“He’s just a friend of my family at the end of the day. He’s not my friend. He’s not nobody I talk to. Everything I do is better than Jamel. It’s gonna mean everything taking this belt from Jamel,” said Shakur Stevenson.

On the other hand, the 35-year-old champion has been quiet throughout the build-up to this fight.
After serving his country for two tours as a marine, Jamel Herring has fought through mental health struggles as well. That is primarily why he usually holds back from the trash talk and all of the banter.
“When you go through those moments, even at that young of an age, it makes you grow up real fast because you come to realize ‘hey, this is not a game like people are really losing their lives out here so it’s not a game’. By 21 years old I had two deployments under my belt,” said Jamel Herring.
