As Mexican Independence Day approaches, the highly anticipated showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Edgar Berlanga has sparked excitement, highlighting the historical rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico in the boxing world. Many consider the event a celebration of national pride, with two proud Puerto Ricans headlining both the main event and the co-main event. Unsurprisingly, these matchups have garnered widespread support, with prominent figures from Puerto Rico lending their voices to boost the morale of the fighters and uphold their homeland’s rich boxing tradition.
Among those offering their support is Amanda Serrano, who has spoken out in encouragement of Edgar Berlanga. But it seems the response to her message hadn’t been too favorable. With several prominent voices questioning Berlanga’s chances against Alvarez, it was all but natural for a few brave hearts to rally back and show their support for Serrano and ‘The Chosen One’.

In her first tweet, Amanda Serrano said, “Some will say tonight my little brother @EdgarBerlangaJr gets to make history if he beats Canelo.” But she further explained. Regardless of whether Berlanga wins or loses the fight, he has already made it to the pages of history by defying odds and reaching this stage when many deemed it an impossible task.
Some will say Tonight my lil brother @EdgarBerlangaJr gets to make History if he beats Canelo, well truth be told He already Made it His-Story, coming from where we came from WE Weren’t Supposed to be here (So They Said) but we refused to believe that & made our own Legacy.… pic.twitter.com/mg6tuH0Ycx

“Now go be great for those 36 minutes, my brother,” said ‘The Real Deal’. However, a few hours later, Serrano came back. She sounded frustrated with followers who expressed their disagreements in a rather rude way. She has no issue with differing opinions. But expects disputes to be addressed respectfully. While her message concluded by wishing everyone to enjoy the fight night, Amanda Serrano warned that the usage of derogatory language would not be tolerated.
Much before the headline event, some of the known voices seemingly questioned Edgar Berlanga’s potential to beat Canelo Alvarez. So when the Brooklyn-born fighter questioned him, former world champion and now boxing analyst Sergio Mora reportedly told him, “Look, you have the chance to shut us all up Saturday! Forget what we think; go be great.”

Praise, but still some hesitation
Now all this for a few words of encouragement? Clearly, some of the fans weren’t too happy about it and took to the comments section to pour their hearts out. Let’s see what some of them had to say.
First, like many, this fan also doubted whether Edgar Berlanga could defeat Canelo Alvarez. Rather, they anticipated an early stoppage happening by either the fifth or sixth round. The fan said, “It’s going to [be] tough, Amanda… I see it getting stopped in 5/6 rounds.”
The next fan though acknowledged that many of the boxing followers come off as bitter critics. Hence they advised Amanda Serrano to pay no heed to all those who are inherently hostile towards her. “Boxing has a disproportionate number of haters, Amanda, and you deserve none of them. Block them.”
The following fan found the whole idea of doubting Serrano’s abilities quite amusing. She is an outstanding boxer who is more than capable of defending herself. Hence they emphasized that people shouldn’t act foolish in front of her. “They do realize that you are a world-class boxer, and you can kick their asses for being stupid, right, lol?” said this fan.

The next fan appreciated ‘The Real Deal’ for supporting a fellow Puerto Rican. However, like many, they also believed that Berlanga had very little chance of winning the fight. “[I] appreciate you backing your countryman, but he has almost no chance tonight. Enjoy the match.”
According to this follower, perhaps Edgar Berlanga was way too nervous before that fight. That’s why he went after even the commentators, even before the fight started. “Dude is confronting announcers before the fight…dude is so shook, lol.”
There is some point in what Amanda Serrano said. Whatever she says may not be agreeable to many. However, that doesn’t mean that boundaries of respect and decency should be crossed while challenging those contentions.

She faced a big disappointment ahead of the Nina Meinke fight. However, Amanda Serrano returned on July 20 to take on Stevie Morgan. The fight took place on the Jake Paul–Mike Perry card. Now she is preparing herself for the much-anticipated rematch with rival Katie Taylor on the November 15 Jake Paul-Mike Tyson event.
