Canelo Alvarez showed yet again why he’s the king of the super-middleweight division. The P4P star put on another fantastic performance and teased a speedy return to the ring. However, the same may not be the case for his opponent, Billy Joe Saunders.

The two fought as the main event of a stacked card and delivered a fantastic fight. Alvarez showed his counter-punching prowess, while Saunders frustrated the Mexican. Ultimately, the fight ended anti-climatically as Saunders’ team threw in the towel when he suffered a swollen eye.

Fresh developments have now revealed that they have taken the 30-1 boxer straight to the hospital. Mike Coppinger from The Athletic was the first to report the news. He took to his Twitter to reveal-

“Billy Joe Saunders was transported immediately into an ambulance to be examined for a suspected broken right orbital bone.”

This showed how serious the injury to Saunders was. And if true, it was the right decision to stop the fight when they did. Moreover, this is also a testament to the incredible power of the Mexican, who caught the Englishman while he tried to avoid a jab.

When can we expect Billy Joe Saunders to return?

Fans of the Englishman will hope that it is not as serious as reports suspect. However, it does not look good for the former champion given how quickly it swelled up and that he could not continue another round. So how long will Saunders be out for?

This would be the same injury that Daniel Dubois suffered in his bout against Joe Joyce back in November. The young heavyweight is still out of action and has only just returned to training. However, he did continue for a few rounds after the initial injury.

Therefore, Saunders could face at least six months out of the sport if it is a broken orbital bone. The former champion will have to also hope there is no other complication like in the case of Dubois. Only time will tell how long the Englishman will be out for.
