Billionaire Floyd Mayweather Makes His Rival “Proud”

It has been over a decade since Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya shared the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 5 in 2007 in a super welterweight super-fight. The fight was billed as The World Awaits and Mayweather won via split decision. After De La Hoya, Mayweather fought twelve professional bouts that included opponents such as Marquez, Mosley, Cotto, Pacquiao, Alvarez, and Berto. Whereas, De La Hoya, following his loss to Floyd, fought only twice and retired in a year and a half, having lost to Manny Pacquiao in December 2008.

Now that Mayweather was at the top of his game and prospects such as Pacquiao and Alvarez were making their appearances on the grandest stage in boxing, De La Hoya then 35, well understood that his time as a professional boxer was close to being over and ticking. Despite the animosity, De La Hoya, fifteen years after their bout, is ready to acknowledge and accept Floyd Mayweather as a pioneer in the sport of boxing.

In his latest interview with FightHype, Golden Boy said, “He’s (Mayweather) a pioneer. If you think about it. Everything that he stands for, everything that he did. In the past, in the present, now, what he’s going to do in the future – it’s like he’s leading the way.” 

De La Hoya went on and expressed how he was proud of Mayweather and his accomplishments in and for the sport of boxing.

De La Hoya believes Mayweather’s contribution to boxing is unique and crucial. That “popular” and “wealthy” individuals such as Mayweather care to repay the sport which has given them so much in life fills Golden Boy with utmost admiration and pride. With an accumulation of relative clauses that followed, De La Hoya, in his own words, said, “It’s very admirable. I love the fact that my fellow peers and fighters like Floyd who are popular, who are wealthy, who know the business, who are smart can lead the way. That makes me proud.”

“Everything else in the past, like talking sh*t, this and that – that was like okay. Our fight took place and all the personal emotions and this and that. But now it’s like we got business to do. Let’s move on. Let’s possibly work together,” Golden Boy added by saying.
