It’s Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia. It’s Matchroom vs. Golden Boy, and it’s Oscar De La Hoya vs. Eddie Hearn. But, how did this mega-fight come to fruition? It appears one man has to take the credit: Bill Haney.
‘The Dream’ and ‘KingRy’ will finally put their rivalry to rest when they face each other on April 20 with the WBC super lightweight crown on the line. Finally, fans had what they wanted, and they have to thank Bill Haney, who worked through Oscar De La Hoya and Eddie Hearn’s stubbornness to make the fight possible.

Bill Haney detailed his endeavors with Nuke as he revealed how he took an opportunity to put on a show with two young fighters in their prime. He added, “Oscar could have stood in the way of this. Ryan is contractually tied to Oscar. Devin is not contractually tied to Matchroom. I was able to go out and talk to Oscar on that infamous day with Bernard Hopkins, and I was able to whisper to Oscar.”
Bill Haney confirms That Ryan Garcia is the A SIDE. Says Devin Haney signed with Golden Boy to make the fight and that he could fight other Golden Boy fighters. When asked whether Devin Haney was contracted under Eddie Hearn, the Haney family’s lynchpin clarified that they have a different sort of contract with Matchroom Boxing. While Garcia has a legally bound contract with De La Hoya, such is not the case between Devin Haney and Hearn. How?
“What we have is another agreement. It was a right-to-match. Right to match, right? Obviously, Eddie couldn’t match it because he didn’t have the fighter. I got the fighter in Ryan Garcia and did the deal with Golden Boy… But the fight was actually made, I made the fight with Oscar,” Bill Haney declared with pride.

Previously, Haney had also lauded the Golden Boy Promotions’ head honcho for his involvement in making the fight possible. He expressed the same when he appeared on the MMA Hour. When he approached the American boxer-turned-promoter, the latter understood the importance of the bout.

“Promoters now are working together. I think we’ve been working with everyone,” Haney said. However, the negotiations were dramatic and seized eyeballs as it went off-track temporarily as Garcia pursued Rolly Romero, Isaac Cruz, and Jose Ramirez, with the added entertainment of social media spats.
