In the boxing realm, decisions can be as unpredictable as a wild swing in the ring. Jermall Charlo, a name synonymous with power punches and impressive tactics, has dropped a bombshell outside of the boxing ropes. The revelation? He’s moved shop to Florida. But that’s not the eyebrow-raiser. He’s chosen to train under someone you’d least expect. Roy Jones Jr., legendary for his lightning-fast jabs and intricate footwork, is now playing mentor to Charlo.
A turn of events so unanticipated, it’s akin to a southpaw suddenly switching orthodox mid-fight. Why would Charlo, at the pinnacle of his career, make such a drastic change? What could he possibly be seeking from Roy Jones Jr.? Is it the promise of a novel fighting technique or simply the allure of the unexpected? Whatever it might be, this choice has the boxing community perched at the edge of their seats.

The Roy Jones Jr. influence: What’s in store for Jermall Charlo?

The subsequent announcement of his choice of mentor turned this ripple of surprise into a full-blown tsunami. And as is often the case with such groundbreaking decisions, it did not take long for fans to weigh in with their take.
One fan couldn’t wrap their head around the decision. In their view, picking Roy Jones as a trainer was an unimaginable choice.
That’s crazy, I would never get trained by somebody like Roy Jones

On the other hand, one fan took a broader perspective. He hinted at Charlo’s former trainer, Derrick, perhaps being too preoccupied with other boxing stars like Spence, Garcia, and AJ to fully dedicate his time to Charlo.

Then, there was another user. Their reservations weren’t about the personalities involved but more on the techniques. They further expressed concerns over Roy’s well-known tendency to mold his trainees in his signature style, a move he deemed unsuitable for Charlo.
Big mistake because Roy tries to make his fighters fight like him. Which is impossible

Another user’s feedback was even more pointed. He drew a clear distinction between Roy’s unparalleled success as a boxer and his less-than-stellar track record as a coach. He insinuated that Charlo might end up on the receiving end of some misguided coaching.
Lmao this going have a bad ending to this. Roy a great boxer but a horrible coach let’s hope he became a better coach for Mal

Another keen observer tried to strike a balance in the heated discussion. While acknowledging Roy’s past coaching missteps, notably with Eubanks Jr., he remained hopeful. His optimism centered on Roy potentially turning a new leaf with Charlo and steering his training in a more productive direction.
I hope Roy does better with him than he did with Eubanks Jr 🙂
Personally, I don't think Jermall has the type of fighting style that Roy can bring the best out of– in my opinion—but let's see what the future holds.— Johnny Wright (@JWrightBoxing) September 9, 2023
Charlo’s unexpected alignment with Roy Jones Jr. serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of the boxing world. Whether it’s a strategic masterstroke or a misstep remains to be seen. The vast array of fan reactions paints a picture of anticipation mixed with apprehension.
